Didn't Dallas do that with Nellie and Avery Johnson?
Phenom -- That may be the case. I can't remember for sure whether mentoring Avery was the purpose behind hiring Nellie. But I can't come up with any other examples.
Also, what we don't know is exactly who Flip will be mentoring. Sam Mitchell doesn't need Flip's mentoring since Sam already has significant head coaching experience. No amount of mentoring could ever make Lowe a decent head coach. We don't know yet if Billups will be brought in as an assistant, much less a head coach in waiting. In any event, I'm a bit mystified at the assumption that Billups is head coach material. He hasn't been a coach, head or assistant, anywhere at any level. Nor is he a charismatic leader type like Mark Jackson. I just don't see it -- at least not without seeing him as a head coach somewhere or at least as an NBA assistant. '
Lip, did you not watch those Detroit and Denver teams Billups was a part of? He was the reason those teams weren't ripped apart by egos and "me" players. He's always had that player-coach type feel and listening to his past coaches, especially George Karl, talk about him make you realize the effect he had. Mr. Big Shot can coach my team any day, with or without HC experience.

Billups was is a leader how ever he did it maybe it would translate to coaching. Hiring these recent player PG types is all the rage right now. Obviously Jackson's persona rubs people the wrong way so maybe Billups will have an advantage that he won't annoy people. lol
Its gonna be interesting to listen to the PC tomorrow and see if Flip actually answers some questions and sheds some light on things.

Isn't that what pretty much happened with Memphis' front office bringing in Joerger being coach in waiting without Hollins being on board/aware?
Cam -- Billups was the consummate team player. As such he became a glue guy at the PG position. But that's a far cry from being a head coach. We don't know how he is as a tactician and we don't know whether he's a motivator. Not saying he doesn't have the potential to be a good head coach. Just saying there is no track record that merits tagging him as Flip's heir. I'm fine if the Wolves hire him as an assistant, but it makes no sense to hire him on the assumption that he would be Flip's head coach in waiting.

Lip your making the argument that people said about Mark Jackson and Jason Kidd very recently and probably will if Fisher gets a job. Its a solid argument and I agree with it, but Jackson's success and The Nets late surge make people wonder if those floor general types might be just the guys that may end up being good coaches.
Heck we might find out later Mark Jackson isn't so great after all. IDK, but lets be honest what great young coach is out there on the market right now? Mark Jackson maybe? yep and thats about it. Many people here are looking for the next great coach, GM whatever it takes to be a championship contender. I don't know if I see that in the guys available like I said besides maybe Mark Jackson. Maybe try another young guy and hope you get the right one. I'd Like to see David Adelman coach the SL team again this year I liked how that team played last year which is the first time I can say that in I can't even remember when.
Goin straight from player to coach takes a perfect situation . Kidd had the luxury of players that got automatic respect from their teamates. Pierce and KG were an extension pf their coach. Who do the Wolves have that can do the same?

No. Hollins was not hired as a temporary head coach for the purpose of mentoring Joerger. Hollins was fired by a new regime that took over for the regime that initially hired Hollins. It was nothing like the current situation with Flip.

Monster - How about Steve Nash? John Stockton? Marbury? Allen Iverson? The list goes on. I haven't even seen a report that Billups is interested in being a head coach. But my main point is that the Billups bandwagon is an empty wagon in which Billups has absolutely no track record as a coach of any kind at any level. Yes, he could potentially turn out to be a good head coach. But there is nothing concrete from which we can conclude he would be. All we know is that he was a successful PG liked and respected by his teammates. That doesn't exactly make him unique. And it's not even close to enough to anoint him as Flip's heir apparent.
As for Jason Kidd, I watched quite a few Nets games on my League Pass last season and I think Kidd was a terrible head coach in spite of the late surge. What happened is that the Nets' vet players sort of took over and got the train back on the tracks. As for Mark Jackson, He is an obviously charismatic motivator, which helps explain his success. Given his proven success as an NBA head coach I would have been content hiring Mark Jackson.
Jackson is a hack who got to preach to an up and coming team. His cheerleading would have certainly fallen on deaf ears with most of this current squad, the "world against us" and cliche boxing analogies would have been met with eye rolls.
