League strongly considering the best 8 records regardless of league.

Post by Porckchop »

Certainly a blow for the Wolves in their building plans? As if the west isn't hard enough they'll have to vy for a spot against any LeBron driven team as well. And with Washington getting Durant eventually.. :)
Will this make it even harder for small market teams to retain their best players?

PC, I think you misinterpreted the proposed rule change. What Silver wants to do is seed each conference for the playoffs 1-8 based on W-L record, as opposed to seeding division winners ahead of non-winners with a better record. I think it's a good idea.

Fair enough. But Why have divisions at all then?

Right...I suspect they will go away.

I had read that they want to keep division winning pennants so the divisions will still stay.

So irrelevant pennants will be more irrelevant.

Nice!

My guess would be in case the idea totally flames out and they can easily revert back. You know, new coke back to classic coke kind of deal.

Divisions successfully create rivalries in every other major sport except basketball. Vikings fans hate the Bears and Packers. Twins fans hate the White Sox. Wild fans hated the Canucks and now hate the Blackhawks, Jets, Avalanche and Blues. What is basketball doing wrong where we have no rivals (mostly due to us sucking) and the biggest rivals come as a result of finals matchups more than anything done in the regular season. The rivalries just within the Western Conference suck. LA/LA is pretty much it. Basketball needs a re-alignment.
