Your Name
Re: Your Name
This is a fun thread
My name is Kyle and I grew up in northeastern South Dakota and I was a Celtics fan and Bird was my favorite player as a kid. I became a Wolves fan because it made sense (I liked all the other Minny teams) the Celtics sucked (Bird McHale etc had left the game) and the Wolves games were on fairly often on local TV. Those teams were pretty bad. Felton Spencer, announcers yelling at Luc Lonely to "Dunk the Ball!!!" I had a sweet Pooh Richardson shirt with awesome 90's graffics. I loved watching the old CBA games or listening to them on the radio. Bobby Phils was probably my favorite Skyforce player ever.
I went to college here in Lincoln Nebraska in the fall of 1996 and except for a year in North Carolina I have been here since. I started school wanting to be a teacher (was a music and PE major for a few years) but ended up finally graduating with a degree in psychology. All my jobs since graduating have been some combination of human services and education.
I am a sports geek and I have really gotten into bicycles and cycling over the years. The last couple years I decided to get more into the college sports scene here and it's been a lot of fun going to different NU sporting events plus NCAA tourney games like the College world series. I got to know some of the Nebraska athletes on a somewhat personal level which has been interesting.
For some other interests I like animals in general but most people call me a cat person since my wife and I have 3 cats and I've volunteered for quite a few years at the local no kill cat shelter in town that's all volunteer run. We actually just moved into our own building this last week and I just finished volunteering at the new location for the first time tonight. I like learning about new things and I have started getting into photography on a purely novice level but it's fun.
My name is a combination of 2 nicknames I had in highschool. When I was a freshman one night ever in the school year I was playing pickup ball with some guys from the high school I went to and a couple staff members. I was maybe 5'4" at the time and was hustling all over and grabbing rebounds from bigger and older guys and the business manager of the school (who I ended up working with as a student for over 3 years and I am still good friend with) called me "The Kyle Monster!" and monster was a nickname that stuck all the way through the first years of college. One of my close friends and classmates from HS would call me "Kyle Pile" sometimes but usually he called me monster so that's where the Pile came from. For various screen names I for some reason combined them and like 20 years later here we are. Lol
Honestly one of my favorite Wolves from back in the day was Wally. He was a good player and he actually played hard.
Also my wife grew up in the Twin cities area so I go up there a couple times a year. Sadly I haven't really gotten to go to many sporting events up there but I did get to the last Vikings game at the Dome which I think my mother in law enjoyed even more than I did.

Re: Your Name
TimThePunk referred to Tim Duncan as a taunt to some guy on the San Antonio board named CalvinCoolidge (or something like that) who liked to troll our board. I have no idea why I never dropped the "Tim" bit!

Re: Your Name
I don't remember how I came across the name AbeVigodaLive as my username. Maybe I had a thing for super duper old, offbeat, goofy-looking character actors or something?
But I remember distinctly why I started posting back at ESPN. I needed to vent. Rashad McCants was trying to steal my soul with every dribble, every shot, every scowl. He epitomized everything I hated about athletes and played the game the "wrong way." I needed to share my hatred for that man.
I had just rediscovered the NBA. Or, more accurately, rediscovered my passion for it. I never stopped watching it. But Steve Nash and those Suns teams made it unbelievably fun again. As a PG who ran with a variety of bad haircuts in and out of college and who dug the art of passing over anything else in sports... I embraced Nash and those teams. But I remained a Wolves guy at heart. You don't change that... Rick Mahorn may have jilted the Wolves. But I never would.
In my hoops infancy, however, I grew up a Boston Celtics fan. I still cling to Chuck Klosterman's claim that there are/were two types of people in this world: Lakers people and Celtics people.
Raised in Minneapolis. Live in a first-rung suburb now. Dug many sports growing up. Played most of them for many years. Basketball has slowly taken center stage over the years. Apparently, I staved off Rashad McCants. And my soul was saved. Now, I'm trying to share the beauty of basketball with the next generation...

Re: Your Name
My name is Jordan. Born in Grand Forks ND, lived for a short time in Minneapolis and spent most of my life in AZ and now live in Prescott where I coach Jr High basketball.
My screen name was originally tha_phenom which was an ode to KG. I saw someone call him that when he declared for the draft. When that ESPN crash happened, I switched to Phenom's_Revenge. I started watching the Wolves on League Pass when I was 11, Marbury's rookie year (started posting on ESPN around then also) but I was always drawn to KG. I thought it was so cool that a high school kid was in the NBA and he was on my home team. No I dont identify with Arizona teams.
It's hard to find people here to talk to about the NBA let alone our Wolves so that's why I love this board. I don't often have time to do the in depth stuff that some of you do but I love reading it and throwing in a couple cents.

My name is Mike, born and raised in Minnesota, now living in Scottsdale, AZ. I've been a Wolves fan since their inception. I don't post much but I do lurk quite a bit, I have found very few better places to get my Wolves fix. Thanks everyone!

Re: Your Name
My name is also Andrew. Was a member of the ESPN boards, but rarely posted, so I've been around for the better part of a decade. Only since moving to this board have I become more active in posting.
I was born and semi-raised in Winona, MN, moved to the Twin Cities when I was a teen, went back to Winona State for university, and currently reside in Hopkins. My username comes from spending all my Summers throughout HS and College, and the better part of each week during college in the gym, 3-4 hours, 4-5 nights a week, just balling it up. I had delusions of grandeur in transferring to a private D3 college to play ball, but the tuition was so ridiculously high I decided to pass. After college I sorta gave up playing ball except for rec league during the Winter. Instead, I play hockey year round a couple times a week. Been a fan of the T'Wolves since as long as I can remember, but we got a lot of Bulls games on WGN growing up, so I was a huge Jordan/Pippen/Bulls fan. Also loved the Rockets with Hakeem in the early 90's. Couldn't get enough of the big-balled Alien Cassel either.
My family has season tickets to the Wild so I go to a lot of games, and when I'm not at one arena or another, my TV attention gets wrestled between the Wild and Wolves. Lot of channel flipping, but I read everything there is to consume about both teams, sports, salary caps, etc.
One of the main reasons I have enjoyed coming to this group for sports discussion is there are a lot of knowledgeable people about various things, and while I disagree with some at times, it's always great discourse. You learn, you teach, you get annoyed, but it's all good.

Re: Your Name
My name is Tom and I'm an alcoholic. Oh - wait, wrong group. Seriously, I was around towards the end of the ESPN days. I had several names i.e. GardysNightmare and CircleMeBert. Seemed like I'd get into it with someone and get banned/have to change my name. Love that this board gives a little more latitude. Sometimes you just have a bad day - but doesn't make you a bad person - right? I think it's cool people can battle here and move on/not hold grudges.
I'm mid-40's although I don't always behave like it. I grew up in the Farm Fields of Southern MN. Moved out East and then back to the South Metro/Burbs about 10 years ago. I work as an Auditor, so when any of you B*tches argue with me about analyzing numbers/stats you have no idea who you are really dealing with! :-)
"Carlos Danger" came from the Anthony Weiner scandal which was happening around the time I registered here. For those who don't know/remember, he was a former House Representative who got caught sexting pics of his ding dong to some women under a fake alias (Carlos Danger). I thought it was hilarious at the time and adopted it as my screen name.

Re: Your Name
My name is Kyle. I got an insider account well before I started posting on the ESPN board only to eventually have David Kahn borderline defame my username khans2k5 (a little part of me dies inside everytime people misspell my name to match his kahns). Born and raised in MN and am back after a short stint in Des Moines, IA for college. Favorite number is 24 on account of Gugliotta being my favorite player as a kid on the Wolves (it's fate was sealed as my favorite number for all time by Ken Griffey Jr.). Being from MN I am well versed in the Loserville, USA culture (Twins won the series when I was 1) so being a T Wolves fan hasn't hurt as much because it's been pretty much a bottom feeder most of my life. I like armchair GM'ing the team back to prosperity only to usually have guys like Kahn brutally murder the dream.

I hope you didn't get a matching Googs barb wire tattoo... that doesn't quite go all the way around.

Googs really was such a unique talent. Loved his passing.
