Derrick Rose to the Timberwolves?
Re: Derrick Rose to the Timberwolves?
Ok I said I might start a basketball satire blog and I actually did it. Click if you want or not whatever. It's entertaining me so far and maybe someone else will get a couple laughs. I plan to post a couple times a week.

It is true that Rubio's shooting was bad in 4th quarter that year but it was not 18% but actually 28%.
And much bigger reason for Wolves 4th quarter struggles was Adelman's mysterious decision to play Barea instead of Rubio in the end of game.
All Wolves players had pretty pathetic 4th quarter net ratings that year but still Rubio had the best (or least awful) 4th quarter net rating out of all regular rotation players with -3.4 and Barea was worst with -14.0.
BTW. Even though Ricky struggled in 4th quarter shooting, he had still TS% 0.452 in 4th quarter when Barea had TS% 0.391.

That was just a strange strange season. Didn't the Wolves lose their first 13 games within 3 or 4 points or something like that?
And Rubio was ATROCIOUS in those games... even with the lesser playing time. Was he pulled (and eventually strategically replaced) because of how bad he was? Or did he play worse because of the benchings?
I remember he went through one ridiculous stretch (I might even do the lengthy research to find it... maybe) where he didn't hit a field goal in the 4th quarter for most, if not almost all of that 13 game stretch. So, it's not only that he shot 28% from the field... he barely shot at all.
Some might point to it as "see, his shooting didn't really hurt the team." But c'mon... you need your PG to score in the 4th quarter. Rubio gave them ZERO offensive threat. Barea did... unfortunately, his lousy play threatened to derail the entire season for the Wolves.
[Edit: Just saw a stat from Robson from the 2014 season. Halfway through the season the Wolves were 0 - 11 in games decided by 4 points or less. Rubio was shooting 12.5% in the final 5 minutes of those games... Barea was simply better. Much better at the time. He shot 13.3% in those "clutch" situations.]
Re: Derrick Rose to the Timberwolves?
That Wolves team was the only one, as I recall, that ever missed the playoffs with a point differential in the top 10. They had the best point differential at a couple points of the season. Only the Wolves. . .

It was because of all the blowouts. Remember, that team had 10 games in the first 40 where they led by at least 30 points. Yet they were still only 19 - 21 at the time!
They were THE classic frontrunning team.

They had some unbelievable first quarters. I remember one in particular against the Lakers where they looked like they were unstoppable.

Rubio made 25 shots in 65 games in the 4th quarter that year. I mean come on. He made 8 for 2014. 8!

You can argue all you want about whether Barea or Rubio was the "better - or least worse" player....but the fact that it was even a remotely close competition between those 2 players does not look well on Rubio. Because if not aware, Barea BLOWS!

I was lucky to be at that game at Staples. It was an unbelievable first quarter...something like 41-19. And they played pretty well the rest of the game too. Nicholson had a sour look on his face the entire game...kind of like he had eaten a bad taco. Things were looking rosy back then, but they changed drastically the next night. Wasn't that the game where both Love and Pek missed two footers in the last 5 seconds that would have beaten the Clippers?

Love missed a shot from right at the rim. At the time, everybody shrugged like "hey, those things happen. No big deal."
I don't think anybody expected it to be the tip of the iceberg in how to lose close games.
