Towns' FG% isn't a problem for me, but his lack of D against SL talent is. My biggest concern with KAT was his mental toughness or edge, and he has done nothing to dispel that concern. I am not surprised that he couldn't duplicate the shooting he showed in his video where he took shots in the gym that were uncontested. I am surprised at the type of shots he took. His decison making will certainly need to improve.
Zach is a player that is going to need a lot of coaching. He takes a lot of unbalanced bad shots, but I do like that he looks stronger. Most of his improvement will likely come throughout the season with more playing time.
I am not surprised by Tyus mainly because I had very low expectations. I think we need to pickup a back up PG (#2) for the season. Neither Tyus or Brown are capable of stepping in if Ricky goes down.
I like what Payne has done, and think he looks the part of a back up PF, but his outside shooting is atrocious. Uncalled bank shots are shots that missed their target by 3 feet or more.
Fair assessments SJM.
- On Towns, lower body strength was the one bugaboo a number of us talked about and it shows out there. Love his passing instincts. It's funny that his passing might be the most advanced part of his game right now.
- I wasn't a fan of what we did to get Tyus Jones, but he obviously deserves time. I will just say this: Given his physical stature and athletic limitations, he has very little room for error. He needs to be supremely skilled to carve out a role in this league.
- LaVine is sort of the opposite of Tyus Jones. He has supreme athletic gifts, but generally a very shaky b-ball IQ. I think playing the 2 will simplify things for LaVine and allow him to play more to his natural strengths.
- Payne can carve out a productive niche for himself by being a hustle/rebounding/nuisance PF in the mold of Kenneth Faried. But he's another guy with a weak lower body that sort of gets bounced around out there when he's playing against real men. Seem to be a theme with a number of our bigs.
