I'm still conflicted on LaVine. I lean towards wanting another guy that's shown a little more especially on the defensive end but there is likely not going to be any perfect prospects at #13. :) As its been said for a number of reasons Lavine can't be judged on his freshamn year because he didn't play a lot is young skinny etc etc. IMO he is one of a few guys (Lavine, Gordon, Young among others) that would be better off staying in college for another year and improve their game but they are out and they will be considered by teams. As I said in another thread I don't get excited about guys based on interviews but LaVine doesn't seem like he is an idiot so that's good. If he is picked its based on potential but that's the draft for ya. Bottom line is a I don't like his finishing at the rim and poor defense but if he can hit jumpshots and become even a decent defender he could be a solid player. He does have enough ball handling ability to be decent I think he can at least dribble his way out of a paper bag unlike some other wings we have had on this team the last 10 years so that helps.

LaVine sounds a little like Kevin Martin 2.0
Gordon worries me. He was a terrible FT shooter in high school. If he was such worker this area should have improved this year. Nobody will guard him. He won't ever be as good as AK47.
Would love to have Smart or Vonlesh from this draft.

longstrangetrip wrote:Lip, if a guy had a 97 MPH fastball plus two other pitches, he likely would have started for his college team...otherwise, it would be a red flag that there was something wrong with him. LaVine is a spectacular athlete, and can shoot and dribble, but he still had a hard time getting off Alford's bench. I went to a game in early March to see what he was all about, and I left the gym concluding that he just isn't a basketball player. He seemed lost in the flow on both offense and defense. Maybe Flip and company can coach him up like Alford couldn't, but I would feel much more comfortable with a college player with an actual track record...there are certainly plenty of them available in the first 20 picks.
LST, not sure what to think of Lavine, but the one thing we need to remember is that he went to UCLA with no fanfare, and was actually a very low propect in the scheme of all of the NCAA. He was ranked #140 of 150 total by rivals.com (and 98 of 100 by ESPN). That being said, he MASSIVELY outperformed expectations, and should be applauded for that. He is certainly not a complete player at this point, and will take some time. The things that clearly stand out are his end-to-end speed (which is freakish), his ability to shoot and like Lip says, he has a great ability to change direction. His weight and "rawness" are going nto hinder him for quite a while. And like Cam and Lip point out, I also feel he may be an all-or-nothing player. You may get the next Westbrook, but more likely, he is the next Ebi. His lack of skill currently just makes it a very tough call.

Lip and cam, that's kind of my point...we shouldn't use a lottery pick in a deep draft on a guy that Steve Alford didn't think could contribute as much as Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams. His NBA competition is going to be much more impressive than that. If you're lottery worthy, like Shabazz Muhammad, you start for UCLA your freshman year and you score more than 8 points total in three NCAA games. Cam, I didn't see the Oregon game, but I remember being impressed by the stats and hoping this kid was finally getting it. He wasn't.
Ultimately, this is a moot discussion, because Flip is not going to take a chance on a long-term project like LaVine. I think the rumors yesterday saying we had guaranteed to his agent we were taking him (who does that?) is a Flip smokescreen.

longstrangetrip wrote:I have never bought into the Zach LaVine hype, so drafting him might be an F to me. I recognize that he is a great athlete...I just don't see any evidence that he can play basketball. He did nothing to justify being a lottery pick during his one year at UCLA, and in fact got worse as the season progressed. The guy only scored 8 points total in three NCAA tournament games. Maybe some think a good coaching staff can turn him into a basketball player, but I see him as by far the biggest risk of anyone expected to go in the first round. Is there another potential first rounder who didn't start for his college team?
Agreed, though the fact that he's not starting at UCLA is not the concern for me. LaVine is a defensive sieve, and is offensively very limited in the half court. His only real skill is transition dunks but there's no way he sees the floor enough on a team that isn't tanking to make that skill useful. An F is maybe a little harsh but I think the chance of him being out of the league in 4 years is much much greater than the chance of him becoming an impact player. He reminds me of Joe Alexander in that he's being drafted almost solely on athleticism hype. That almost never seems to work out.

Biggest F for me, and I highly doubt they will, but if they draft Dario Saric, who won't play for at least 2 yrs.

Zach LaVine and Gary Harris both scare me. LaVine's basketball IQ worries me and Harris because he's a 6'3" shooting guard and I prefer a bit more length than that.
