Backup/project PG options
Backup/project PG options
Maybe we will be surprised and the Wolves match son Tyus but I doubt it. Who do you want to see brought in to help at the PG spot?
I'm thinking a project guy that's a defensive minded tough player. Shaq Harrison comes to mind I think Chicago let him go so he is available to be signed. There is some chatter about the Bulls being willing to Move Dunn if they get something for hi so maybe they want to bring Shaq back after that move. So...I just watched some highlights. He is like 6'4" and athletic. I may have found my next fringe NBA crush.
I have no idea how feasible it would be but someone that might be interesting is Denver's 2-way Guard Brandon Goodwin. He put up some numbers in the g-league last year especially on loan to the Iowa Wolves. He is a restricted guy as a 2-way player so I doubt it makes sense to make him an offer but he is interesting.

If we go with a vet, I'd opt for Jeremy Lin. If we want to go young, I might try to do a modest deal for Kris Dunn. Brandon Goodwin isn't a bad idea. Or our own summer league guy, Barry Brown Jr.
Re: Backup/project PG options
Il go with culver. Nothing to lose there. We have a bunch of wings that need minutes.
Culver played point guard in high school. Play some pg in college and handled the ball a lot. At the very least he will defend.
Oladipo, lavine and wade started their careers playing point guard. They eventually shift to sg but i believe playing point help in their development.
I see teague as the starter so culver back him up.

Barry Brown Jr. has defense and could be a project PG. I just don't want to get into a bad contract because we think we have need. If no trade goes down I am fine with Napier as our 2nd PG!

Re: Backup/project PG options
Yeah, there's a reason why good organizations find cheap backup point guards like Cory Joseph, Monte Morris, Fred Van Vleet, etc.
It's arguably the deepest position in the game. Paying a guy MLE money when he doesn't have starter-level ability just isn't the way to go. There are far too many options that make more sense financially, including Shabazz Napier who's already on the roster.

Re: Backup/project PG options
I think you go Teague-Napier and then experiment with Culver as a backup if either of those other two get hurt. But Teague-Napier is a solid-ish PG duo, as much as I dislike Teague aesthetically. Hopefully we design an offense that moves the ball around more and doesn't rely on a ball dominant PG. We have KAT - design the offense around him.
Re: Backup/project PG options
Why do we want Teague to start? I just see no upside to it, even if he's our best point guard. I don't want to see the Thibs approach where we sacrifice the future to try to eek out a few more wins and sneak in as an 8th seed at the expense of not developing younger talent. I'd rather see Tyus (if we keep him) or Culver as the starting point guard.
Re: Backup/project PG options
Jeremi Grant is a young vet that would be interesting as a depth guys'd cheap. Trey Burke is more of a bucket getter with likely poor defense but if these guys come for basically the vet min...sure. Both guys are combo guards not really PGs.

Jerami Grant would be our starting power forward if we acquired him, which honestly isn't a bad idea if the Thunder go full rebuild. Jerian Grant would be a solid third stringer, but I'd prefer Trey Burke.
