Sure, I wish we got him cheaper, but 9 mill a year over three years is not a big deal and will not really be an immovable contact like Wiggs, Dieng, Teague or as I suspect DLO's contact will turn out to be. If Tyus takes over as starter and improves his outside shooting a bit (he's younger than DLO), his contract will turn out to be a bargain.
$9M for a backup point guard is pretty expensive, especially one that doesn't have the potential to grow into an All-Star caliber player. He might not even be worth half of that salary in all honesty.
If Jones' offer sheet was matched and he did somehow take over the starting gig, you can throw the whole season in the trash because that means Jeff Teague severely injured himself.
Lastly, Jones is a grand total of three months younger than D'Angelo Russell... and about a third as talented. We're talking about a backup point guard on a team that just won 36 games compared to an All-Star guard that took his team to the playoffs.
The Minnesota bias is real -- real frustrating.
DLO has been discarded by two franchises already and he was lucky to get in the all-star game as an injury replacement. He'll be lucky to ever make it back, especially now that he's in the West and once Klay is back healthy, he may be just a mere back up collecting max money. Give me Tyus, with his steady ball handling, positive defense, high basketball IQ, team first attitude, lack of drama and bargain salary any day.
I hate to see Tyus go, but his value really fell last year with his inability to consistently knock down the 3. 33% career low volume 3-pt shooter just doesn't cut it unless you are REALLY good in a couple of other areas.
In a vacuum, $9.3M per season isn't that big of a deal for a guy playing 18 - 25 mpg... especially if he's younger and could potentially (theoretically) improve to be a semi-viable NBA starter. It's a contract that could be moved relatively easy enough.
But it is when the Wolves are already up against the cap because of $62M for Dieng, Wiggins and Teague.
Now, those are looking like legit bad contracts, considering they take up about 60% of the team's payroll.
I'm surprised Memphis was the team to come in. They just drafted their PG of the future. A Tyus/Ja backcourt isn't big enough to play next to each other. Maybe they were just willing to give him 9 million to backup Ja. I don't really care either way if we match or don't. The only thing I'd add that hasn't really been brought up yet is 9 million makes him a good include in a trade for a high paid player. These middle of the road deals are what facilitate trades because if you are paying maxes or minimums you just end up not being able to make any moves.
Yeah, Tyus got WAY too much. He should be in the pack of PG like McConnell, Mudiay, Arcidiacono, Cook....all who got $2-3MM per season. Those are actually all guys I would have gone after in FA for one reason or another.
I think now a vet like Lin, Mack or Grant makes sense on a 1 year, vet min deal. They can manage spot starts as needed.
Had Shelvin Mack and Trey Burke on my list of cheap free agents to look at prior to the start of free agency. Still think they'd be a good look. Burke has more upside given his ability to score the basketball, but Mack is the steadier player, in my opinion. I'd prioritize Burke and let him and Napier play it out for backup PG minutes.

That is quite the misrepresent. Both times DLO was traded were so their teams could acquire top 10 players. IMO that does not detract from him in any way. And this is coming from someone who isn't a huge fan of him, but I see his talent and potential especially the thought of him with KAT. At least they made a good push for him.
As for the All-Star game... fan voting... enough said
Wow, good for Tyus, but that's too much to match in a vacuum, and with a big question mark at the point going forward, we're not in a position to make a commitment to a high-end backup PG. We need to figure out our starter after next year first.
If he could knock down an outside shot consistently, he might be worth it, otherwise not, and definitely not in our position. I'll be happy to see him with the Grizz next year though. That looks like it could be a fun team.
I like Tyus - I get the sense he is a good person and he was a decent backup. Matching the offer imo would be a pretty big mistake long term - he is not getting better, as a matter of fact - his advanced numbers show him regressing slightly with one exception and that is his turnover % had a dramatic improvement. Not sure how to interpret that but I don't think that is a stat I push all-in on as an indicator of some monumental development moment. His lack of any clear progression at this point would suggest he has hit his ceiling.
The eye test and his career splits would indicate very strongly that he can not play as a starter and maintain his effectiveness - the splits are pretty clear in that he is taken advantage of defensively as a starter. Offensively he may be a bottom of the league level starter level but he just lacks the speed and/or strength to play against actual starting PGs. I swear I recall everyone coming to this clear conclusion last year and relegated him to nothing more than feel-good backup PG here.

For 4-5 million I'd take the chance that he makes the leap that i still think he COULD make. Double that? Nope. It's not easy being a Wolves fan this offseason.
