I am wondering if we need to reform laws around cases against the public sector. I think it would be wise to set caps for settlement offers and require verdicts for numbers over that amount. (aka civil trial with jury approval.)

Thats a very Canadian idea. Isnt litigation as a vehicle to wealth part of the American Dream? The freedom to sue for as much as you want.

Well that got a bit spicy and not for the reasons I'd expect. Yes, it can be a bit much when Abe gives people shit. That's where I'd expect some spiciness to come, not from Abe making the very good point that people and society have evolved while giving good examples of it. He wasn't pulling said examples into the argument, but merely pointing out that society evolves, and stops doing things it percevies as wrong, like beating kids (which I personally consider pretty much anything that leaves a clear marks on a kid, like bruises, welts, etc).

I'm fine with spanking personally, but have also seen examples of good kids who weren't spanked too. Another good point was that there are too many factors to say the problems we see are because of less kids being spanked for punishments.

Lastly, I do think Abe could reign it in a bit at times. Having a little go with people can be fun, but can quickly go south. If someone isn't enjoying friendly ribbing and banter then it's just not a good thing and I'd hope we would be able to both realize when we go overboard (and own it - we all mess up at times in some way) and also be able to just say hey I don't really care for this. I'm sure we all get fiery from time to time for one thing or another. It's great that we get passionate about things, but let's always try to remember, we're here for fun/enjoyment and when someone isn't it sucks.

2. I made a quip about a person getting worked up about politics and was told "fuck yourself." Then, I added a light-hearted gif (or three) and was called a "pussy"... and even challenged to a fight? Or something.

1. Did I know I was going to upset Cool? You bet. Apologies for screwing things up for other posters on that one. I could have gotten my point across in a different way(s) without pushing his buttons so much.
2. I didn't do anything wrong in the discussion with Carlos. So there's nothing to reign (sic) in there.

1. Hopefully this dumpster fire of a thread leads to even more dissatisfaction with politics on the basketball board and we never see a thread like this here again.
2. Politics/societal issues are such nebulous things. There's no true "right/wrong" answer most of the time. It's complicated. Confusing. Et al. But most of us can agree that the Timberwolves suck balls more than any NBA franchise has ever sucked balls. Let's get back to what we do best.

A couple thoughts I had as I read through the last few pages.

History and experiences inform how we perceive and react. This can be both helpful and maybe less so depending on various circumstances.

There is a tension between having a fair system that can be followed and the reality that there are a myriad of factors at play. When it comes to people they are different. If I tried to do the same thing with one person on my caseload which would be very effective for them it may have VERY poor results for someone else. There has to be something we can all follow but there also has to be some latitude for individuality and in terms of systems possibly locals.

There is also a tension between freedom and creating some sort of rule that people need to follow that seems like it would reasonably positively impact society. Currently there is no mandated instruction on parenting. You do have to read a manual and do a test before getting a drivers license but parenting? No. But who is going to teach people parenting? Is it the right thing to be teaching people? Old there is legit grey area and like I said above what works in one instance isn't going to work in another one. I don't have kids and that's a decision my wife and ai made before we got married. From my perspective it's an unbelievable responsibility even if you have had a pretty good upbringing and plenty of resources. Kids are changing all the time and so parents have to do some changing too. I think parents need more support and education but will Americans ok that or will the freedom to do it they way they want and individualism keep something like that from happening. I'm not even saying these things are the answer or anything and using this as an example. Just to be clear I'm a very independent person partly my personality and partly because both of my parents are as well.

I have a question for anyone willing to share their experience. At what point in your life did you learn to have conversations and dialog with people about difficult subjects?

Abe, not disagreeing with anything you said above and I do feel like a couple folks came on a bit strong.

To be fair though (see what I did there?)......for someone who abhors political threads and off-topic discussion and constantly reminds the rest of us of this fact, you sure did engage a lot on this one! Perhaps you should follow your own advice (?). You can willingly choose to completely ignore anything with an "OT" in the subject line and blissfully have no clue how others feel, think, or ruminate on various hot topics of the day.
