We locked in a guy that will likely be playing 18 productive minutes from the bench (if not more as a starter) for 7 million. He's not a negative . . . This is a great deal.
Sorry to say we have a better deeper roster than we had a year ago.

Agreed. Especially with the team option.
Who the hell else was left that we could have reasonably expected to want to sign here? Of course someone like Crowder may be preferable, but he obviously did not want to come to a bottom feeder at this stage of his career.
We retained a guy at a position of need, one who knows the system, and can shoot for the system.
Re: Hernangomez 3 yr 21 million
Not the biggest Hernangomez fan. He shot a un-repatable % from 3 and I still wasn't a big fan of him.
I will say though Rosas comes from the land of trying to acquire assets. Hernangomez and Rubio will have about 26 million in expiring deals next season what could be extremely valuable.

Didn't put that together. Great point.
Re: Hernangomez 3 yr 21 million
I think most of us expected this. Rosas was totally invested in Juancho as "his guy." The problems with this signing is two-fold. First, this team desperately needs to improve its 3rd worst League defense and Juancho does nothing to address that need. In fact, he'll simply be part of the problem as another poor defensive big to go with KAT and Naz. Secondly, there's a opportunity cost associated with this deal. I would think the Wolves could have signed Noel for the same amount since Noel took $2 million per year less and 1 less year to sign elsewhere. Noel would have actually provided some desperately needed rim protection. I also suspect the Wolves would have signed Bobby Portis for the full MLE. He settled for the MLE and only two years with Milwaukee so I would think he could have signed with the Wolves for the MLE and another year or two. Portis is the sort of guy who I see as a bona fide starting PF next to KAT. He's better defensively than Juancho and also a better 3-point shooter.
Having said all that, signing Juancho isn't terrible and it won't be the difference maker for this team. Ricky will help on both sides of the ball. Okogie and Culver will defend while KAT and DLO will score. The keys to this next season, in order of importance, will be:
1. The defensive improvement of KAT and DLO;
2. The shooting improvement of Okogie and Culver;
3. Beasley's ability to stay out of prison & stay at or near last season's level with the Wolves;
4. At least one other young player stepping up as a major positive contributor - Layman, Vanderbilt
The key longer term to becoming a championship competitor will be the development of Edwards. If he's on a trajectory to reach his incredible potential based on his physical abilities, then things should go really well for the Wolves in a couple years. I'm assuming by then the team will have a new owner and a new head coach.

I completely overlooked that Juancho and Rubio have already built chemistry over in Spain. Just won the gold medal last December.

It seems Portis wanted to go win. I have zero idea what Noel thinks after he turned down 70 million dollars.
I agree KAT absolutely has to be more of a force on D, and with the added offensive talent - maybe he can focus more there. Though I can also see KaaT getting disgruntled if he isn't counting stats.
DLO I do not see ever improving his D much.

Lip I think you know I am a fan of Portis. Having said that the idea that him being a no-brainer for the mid-level might not hold up. Why?
Defense. I can't find any evidence that he isn't terrible. Google "Bobby Portis defense" and you will find people saying he is horrific on that end. I personally was under the impression he was solid but it sounds like I was wrong on that. I started looking this up because I knew in the past Portis was considered bad and thought he had improved so Juancho might do the same. lol
Portis net rating is mostly negative in his career. All of 538's projections and metrics shoe a guy thats a negative player. They were nice and called him a project but basically had him a guy thats not worth anything.
His rebounding numbers have been strong but last year his per 36 numbers were under 9 per game. I wonder if that was because he played center. Meanwhile Juancho averaged that rebound rate as a PF for the Wolves and remember that Juancho played alot of SF in his time with Denver so his career rebound rate is going to be lower.
Offensively Portis might not be good either. There are people that complain about him trying to post up and in general not passing the ball. His career FG percentage within 3 feet of the rim is 60% which isn't great for a big.
Oh and lets not forget Portis was the guy that punched Mirotic and knocked him out a of bunch of games a couple years ago.
So bad news for the Bucks they got a cheap flawed player for relatively cheap. I'd guess they will be able to get a little more out of him than bad teams like the Bulls and Knicks did but as a starter...based on what i have found...it sounds like a disaster...yes even more than Juancho who is cheaper than the full mid-level you suggested. =)
Juancho by the advanced numbers like net rating shows a more positive picture and while I still consider him a likely bench player he probably fits the roster better than Portis does. They have basically exactly the same career 3 point shooing percentage with Juancho taking a little higher volume. I was with you and thought I would rather have Portis if the money was the same but at this point I'd probably take Junacho because he is more of a combo forward and Portis is a PF/C. I certainly wouldn't want to pay Portis more.
