Wolves Summer league thread

I wanted to bring up a comparison for Tyus that might grow more appropriate over time; Sam Cassell.

The guy just had that clutch factor at the end of games. He had the brass, the game control, the poise. He got better as games went on. He was never a defensive stalwart, and often as he aged he looked more like a detriment, but he had guys like Hakeem and KG backstopping him. Tyus has KAT... and KG! Their measurables are also relatively similar in terms of height and weight, and neither ever was considered a great athlete.

I can't find anything else really about other measurables, but Houston was my favorite team outside of the Wolves/Bulls when I was a kid, so I watched Cassell a lot and I don't think this comp is too outlandish.

Not a bad comparison. When I think of "best case scenarios" comparisons, Mike Bibby is a guy that comes to my mind.

I am wondering that if the Wolves use the cap space they have to absorb a big contract, with a year or two left, later this summer and if Tyus and/or Adriean go in the deal as young and cheap fill ins. Doogie has mentioned the Wolves waiting on teams in need of cutting salary at some point and also that the Wolves have been looking at other point guard free agents like Hinrich. It makes sense to me that Thibs wants a vet to come in and run a steady offense when Ricky sits and let Dunn play off the ball. This doesn't mean Tyus has to go but maybe he has some value to help get a deal done.

Yeah, the Wolves have played two straight decent summer league games. I watched most of today's game. Unlike the first three games, the supporting cast has looked okay -- they actually hit some shots!

So does this mean Kris Dunn does not make his teammates better?!?

Just watched the replay. Tyus Jones pretty much controlled the game the whole time he was out there, at least offensively. It was the second impressive performance in a row from him. There is something about Tyus and tournaments - the dude just turns it on. He made a tough floater and a couple of FTs late to seal the deal tonight.

Yeah, just watched portions of it myself and Tyus was terrific. He has such great vision, and his passes are invariably on the money. And with his teammates finally making shots, his assist total was good too...10 against only 2 TOs. I wasn't focused on his defense much so I'm interested in what others saw. He's so fluid running the offense, I'd love to see him get a chance this year.

LST, His defense was OK-ish. He was able to create a couple of turnovers and generally had the right intensity level on that side of the ball, but there were a few times Andrew Harrison just bully-balled him right to the hoop and there was nothing Tyus could do about it.

Unfortunately, Tyus is not physically equipped to match up with the scoring PGs in today's NBA - and there are a lot of them. Irving, Westbrook, Lillard, Dragic, etc. would all be major mis-matches in the other team's favor. So it's just hard for me to see him being a regular starter in today's game unless his offense becomes so damn good that you just can't keep him off the court (like Nash, Harden, Curry, and other weaker defenders we know about through the years).

Given his age, I'm perfectly fine having him as the 3rd PG again this year. If you look at a guy like Cory Joseph, he entered the league after only one year of D-1 college like Jones and came up very slowly through the Spurs system as a 3rd string PG behind Parker and Mills. Now he is a very good backup to Lowry and often plays with Lowry in two PG lineups.

The good news is that it appears we FINALLY have some PG depth on this team with Rubio, Dunn, and Jones. Given Jones' age and draft position, there is no reason to force-feed him minutes.

Good post. I wonder though what resistance a guy like Dragic would have given up at the age of 20 in a similar setting although obviously he has more length. He seemed pretty skinny coming into the league if I remember right.

I have been pretty much anti-Jones, but I think he has a future as a solid backup. I think he will be fine as 3rd stringer this year and playing a little 2nd string if injuries occur to Rubio or Dunn.

Being anti-Payne I wish he would have turned out, but don't see it working out here for him.

Not saying he will, just saying I'm not convinced he won't. The main reason is Dunn is going to play, and I see him needing to play the point.
