Re: Wolves Summer league thread
We need to make a Kansas trifecta happen this offseason, I don't want Chalmers, can we get Danny Manning to be an assistant?

Tyus has been named the Summer League MVP. He has been pretty impressive this past week.

This is good to see. Pulling for Tyus even though I think we reached for him.

This idea that Dunn can play significant time at the 2 is just not one I can endorse at this point. Two summer league games just isn't enough for me. I sincerely hope everybody else is right and I am wrong. So instead of hammering on this point for the next couple months, I'm just going to resort to being a cheerleader on the topic and hope it works out the way the majority thinks it will. It would certainly make us a much more dangerous team and provide greater flexibility.
Can you actually go into specifics as to why you believe this instead of just saying you can't see how it would work? Is it Dunn's size, length, shooting? What makes it so far fetched in your mind that it's a possibility Dunn can play a decent amount at the 2? His two summer league games were against guys in NBA backcourt rotations and he held up fine so what is it that is keeping him from being a playable guy at the 2? I get that it's just gonna be an agree to disagree situation, but so far you've mostly been in the just can't see it camp instead of saying here's why I don't think it will work camp. Maybe I missed it, but refresh me why you don't think it can work. You seem to be pretty well set it's not gonna work so convince us or at least try as to why it won't.
On 2nd thought, maybe I haven't explained myself as much as I could have. I'll be brief:
I'm not convinced Dunn can knock down outside shots consistently enough at the NBA level, especially from behind the arc. When you pair two guards (Rubio, Dunn) who struggle from the outside you become much more easy as a team to defend. It's bad enough when the D can sag off of one player, but when you don't have to respect the outside shot of 2, it makes it much more tough on your front court to score. In this day of the proliferation of the 3 point shot, I think we will be at a real disadvantage.
A secondary reason is that Dunn has very good point guard skills, and I think he is best with the ball in his hands. Playing the shooting guard position is going to limit his time with the rock, and I don't think that is a good thing.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm ready to move on as you suggested.
How do you think the Bulls are going to make it work with Rondo Wade and Butler? :)

Sounds like a possible disaster.

Thanks Cool. Perhaps we're coming at this from slightly different perspectives. Maybe Dunn's ideal position is not next to Rubio in a backcourt, but in order to continue developing talent as we build towards something special, I feel like it's at least 'workable'.
I think it's probably Dunn's 3 pt shooting ability that is the main question for all of us as to whether he can play next to Rubio in the backcourt. But I think that's an issue that we'll face this season regardless of whether Dunn plays at the 2. Overall, we still lack 3 pt shooting in the backcourt and on the wings. So having a backcourt of Rubio and Dunn with Wiggins at he 3 does seem unbalanced. But what if we pair those three guys with Belly and KAT who can knock down threes? Each of Rubio, Dunn and Wiggins are great at penetrating, and that can move the defence off balance. And with KAT and Belly in the frontcourt, hopefully the paint is not too clogged to start with.
One of the things I continue to be fascinated with regarding Rubio is his ability to draw the defence - even though he's not much of a threat to score, he's able to move the defence and dictate things on his terms. I see Rubio, Dunn and Wiggins all being able to move the defence and that opens the game for others - whether it be spotting up behind the arc or slashing to the basket (or just scoring themselves when they get into the lane).
It's a bit unorthodox to play that type of lineup, but most importantly to me is that it's a collection of good, smart basketball players. So I don't know if it will work or not, but I am really intrigued by it.
Also, as noted above, I think we're still at a stage in our progression as a team where it doesn't really matter if it fits perfectly. We can throw it out there and see how it develops. In a lot of different discussions over the off-season, we've talked about how different additions may fit. At this stage, we probably have too many people who need touches to be at their best and not enough 'glue guys'. But that's OK for now. Just continue to accumulate and develop talent. And then finesse the best fit with 3&D guys over the next few years. And I think getting Dunn quite a few minutes at 2 contributes to that.

Thanks for responding. Now we'll wait and see how it all works out.
