Wig signed

Post by TAFKASP »

I share the concerns of many that he'll never be worth it, but at least he's great at one thing and durable to boot.

It was only a matter of time - no surprise. He is now officially overpaid. Hopefully after this season I no longer feel that way.

Well actually he isn't making that big money till the extension kicks in next year so is he overpaid at 7.5 million this year? :)

Good point, but since the money is guaranteed, I think of it as basically kicking in now even though the cash flow doesn't begin until next year. So yeah, he's still overpaid! For the money coming his way, I'd love to see him take his first career charge this year or actually get a floor burn diving after a loose ball.....nah, I won't get my hopes up.

Wiggins may be overpaid but will be tradeable for the life of the deal and probably be easily tradeable. Extending Towns and Butler will assure not having money to spend this big on anyone else so this is a no brainer. Worst case scenario is Wig is an expensive cap hold for a future trade.

For all those Wig critics out there read this quoted from NBA dot com:

"For his career, Wiggins has played in 245 of a possible 246 games, averaging 20.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 36.2 minutes per game. Only three players (LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony) scored more points before their 22nd birthday and Wiggins' 4,995 career point total ranks sixth on the Wolves' all-time scoring list. Wiggins won the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the NBA's Rookie of the Year following the 2014-15 season in which he averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists, becoming the first Wolves player to win Rookie of the Year honors."

Two things Wigs currently brings is durability and scoring. The other categories will get better as he develops. In my mind he absolutely deserves the max, considering what other players are getting paid.

I'd like to share your confidence, but they haven't over the first three years. He has the offensive game of a multiple time All-Star, but this team needs him to have a well rounded All-Star level game! I think you could say that after many years of waiting for Rubio's shot to round into form I'm more than slightly gunshy when it comes to Wiggins suddenly being more than an offensive juggernaut!

I cannot put those two together. Other players getting overpaid doesn't make me feel any better at the possibility of Wiggins contract becoming the ball and chain that prevents the team from putting a quality supporting cast around KAT and Butler.

I'm not really down on Wiggins chances of becoming that all around star player so much as unwilling to buy into the hype again. I guess I'll gladly be a late arriving passenger on the bandwagon when and if he arrives!

I think you knew I was kidding around. Your point still stands when you look at him next year will you say he is overpaid? In a league of a lot of shorter contracts it feels like having a guy like Wiggins locked up for 6 years.

A couple things that I hold onto even if Wiggins ends up being just a scorer.

He has legit length and high level athletic ability. This isn't 't a Monte Ellis type who is undersized.

He has shown ability to hit 3's. It's not certain he will be league average but his progression is positive.

So it feels likely that Wiggins will be a scorer and has the size and athletic ability to at least be an average defender. That would make a 2 way wing who can really score. Maybe he isn't a star player but that's worth quite a bit. In 3 years he would be 25 with 3 years left on his contract. If a team like the Nets were willing to take on a guy like Crabbe there will be a team happy to acquire Wiggins. How happy (meaning what you could get for him if that's the direction you needed to go?) idk but my most significant concern for these long term contracts is health. If he stays healthy he will be worth a large chunk of his contract.

He deserves your high expectations Q. :)

I understand you're concerns SP, but the fact the Wigs is still only 22 gives me some faith that he'll become a better all round player. I hope Butlers work ethic and intensity rubs off on him. One of the main reasons I loved that trade was not only acquiring Butlers all round game, but also his locker room presence.

Thibs was sure pumping Wiggins tires in the press conference. Seems he is high on his character, potential, and work ethic.
