Ryan Saunders, the modern NBA and crazy (but predictable) statistics.

Post by AbeVigodaLive »

So the Wolves have young blood on the sidelines. Whew. Finally!

Welcome to the modern NBA. After playing a style disconnected with the modern NBA under the past three retread coaches (Saunders, Mitchell, Thibodeau), the Wolves have an up-and-coming coach that's shirley going to embrace how the game is played. Right? RIGHT???!!!

The Wolves have not made more three pointers than the opponent since January 30 (18 games).

Opp: 246 makes (13.7 per game)
Wolves: 170 makes (9.4 per game)

The most the Wolves have made in any game is 12.

[note: i know covington is out. and injuries. and blah blah blah. meh. this has been a huge issue for the wolves for many years. not really interested in excuses.]

What shooters are supposed to just chuck it up on our team again? Did I miss a key signing somewhere?

Teague - below average shooter this year ; average volume
Rose - above average shooter ; average volume
Tyus - below average shooter ; no volume
Okogie - below average shooter ; no volume
Wiggins - below average shooter ; average volume
Saric - average shooter ; average volume
Towns - good shooter ; average volume for a good shooter
Dieng - below average shooter ; no volume
Taj - non-shooter

We have no high volume guys and 1 good shooter on the whole team. So what about that fact means we should be shooting more 3's than our opponents? It's a personnel issue. Not a coaching one. Coaches are supposed to coach to their team's strengths, not force them to do something they aren't good at just to keep up with the league.

Saunders hasn't done great, but just forcing a square peg in a round hole isn't the answer either.

Sure. I even mention it. But the Wolves are shooting less and giving up more than under Thibs... who was ripped daily here (literally) for it.

So I'm poking fun a bit at the anti-Thibs crowd... along with sharing some pretty crazy stats. My biggest fear is that when the Wolves finally catch on to this three point trend (after years and years being at the bottom of the league)... they'll be that many years behind the next strategy employed by other more successful, better franchises.
