DE-FENSE is the great equalizer my friends. We'll never get the star power here to have a top 4or 5 offense, but there is no reason we can't become an elite defense. But first we have to fix the culture, the coaching, and the players. Sigh.

I don't know how we do any of those things without a new owner. Doogie reported that the job is basically Saunders and discussed how attractive the money that Glen could save by getting Ryan at a discount is to Taylor. This team is hooped as long as Taylor is the owner.

Q is right it's a system and culture thing. Last night the Wolves looked like they had no idea what they were doing at times. It wasn't effort.

As for Ryan getting the job and...that being a bad thing or embarrassing...maybe. Let's take a step back here. He is a rookie coach with a roster where he is nearly every game playing a different lineup often playing players nobody thought would play any type of regular minutes for this team. Nobody has played every game for this team. Defense is about want to and all that but a system matters and getting guys to buy in. Sure it's been bad but to say that's for sure the way it's gonna be going forward with Ryan isn't a certainty either. Hell did anyone thing we would be as bad as we were defeicely with Thibs as the head coach? No nuggets haven't been a good defensive team with Mike Malone either and he was a defensive guy too. Is it likely we will not be a good defensive team next year? Yes but that likely more about that we haven't than who takes over unless we get some elite coach who will not be available. Dane Moore made a good point about this team being able to score next year they should look to add defense with some players. Honestly I'm not sure that's gonna really make a difference but I do agree with the basic perspective.

I'm not embarrassed at Ryan's talents or abilities as a coach. I'm embarrassed that the story seems to be he's a lock for the job and a major factor in the decision making is the money Glen will save.

Just read this...

"The Wolves have scored at a rate of a top-3 offense with Towns on the floor since December."

And the Wolves were ranked 4th just last season.

That being said... yes... the defense has been very bad for a long time and absolutely must change significantly for any kind of sustainable success.

Ok I get where you are coming from. I know I'm giving Glen too much credit that he doesn't deserve but I honestly doubt saving money is really a significant factor but more of a bonus one. We know Glen likes people And I think he is also getting positive reports about Ryan from people which may include players and that's more significant to him than saving some money. Glen is even MORE a relationship person good and bad more than a saving a few bucks person. The question is whether Ryan can coach and or the franchise can bring in some assistants that also help make this team better. That's one thing we forget about some also. Not only was Ryan thrust into this thing but he didn't get to choose most of the staff and Jerry S. Who came on after Thibs was fired is new.

Back to Ryan's actual coaching chops...it's a mixed bag right now (you can go either way) and to me it's ok to say we really don't know if he is good or not. At this point whether or not it's embarrassing keeping Ryan over other options...probably depends on the other options. Is there going to be anyone even at the Dwayne Casey level that we pass up? If not it's hard not to just see what we have with Ryan.

I think Glen is a relationship person as well. But if we come out of this pivotal point in our franchise with Ryan Saunders and Fred Hoiberg or someone else that Glen is comfortable with as our brain trust we will continue to just look amateur. Glen's financial and interpersonal comfort has done enough damage to this team. I'm ok if one of the coach/GM combo is a choice based on relationship, but there's got to be some voices who can challenge the status quo if this franchise is going to go anywhere.
