Why is Gorgui's Contract such a big deal?

Post by KG4Ever »

Why are the Wolves so adamant about moving Gorgui's contract? Granted, we are overpaying him, but lots of players are overpaid and aren't moved. I just don't see the point in giving up draft picks (or foregoing the right to receive them in a trade) just to move his contract. He's likeable and not a cancer in any way and if we need to move his contract in the future for salary cap reasons we could do so less expensively.

Maybe, I'm missing something but I don't see how his contract is hindering roster construction at this point in time. Anyone care to shed some light on the Wolves thinking here.

I agree with you. I think it would be a big mistake to squander draft assets simply to get rid of his contract. And as I've said before, I think it's a mistake to insist on including him in a Butler deal because that simply diminishes the player value we get in return.

If you can find a way to move his salary its pretty simple to see how that would help in roster construction as this team is heading toward Lux tax territory pretty quickly. If you can make 15-17 million dollars disappear with a non-lottery first round pick you have to consider doing that as you can save a boatload of money and probably be able to sign another player or more. The thing is that Dieng is going to be costly to move it will take more than just a 1st round pick to move it would take 2. The reason Dieng is considered is quite frankly the Wolves only have a couple contracts they likely are inclined to move. Dieng is one and Butler is another. The miami situation is an example of how the Wolves could Move Dieng and end up with a different but less bad contract not just getting rid of the whole situation. Dieng isn't particularly hurting roster construction now In fact he is a pretty decent backup center but its down the road where his money could be much more problematic.
