3 pt shooting

Post by crazy-canuck [enjin:18955461] »

I don't understand why we dont shoot 3's more often.

Wiggs, kat, cov, saric, tolliver, rose etc.. we have so many guys that are or can be good 3pt shooters on volume. We either hesitate and dribble into the paint (cov and saric are doing this half the time now), everything is a contested look when we do take one, or we take them from the most difficult spots on the floor.

This is starting to drive me nuts.

We probably can't defend the 3pt shooting because we keep practicing against thibs' outdate version of a 3 pt offense.

Jim pete mentioned that weve had the worst 3 pt disparity in the nba in the last 3 year.

Jonk tweeted that weve been shooting an average of 12 3 pt shots less than our opponents the last stretch of games.

Disgraceful. We are behind before the game even begins.

I get it. We hate Thibs. And it's alarming that the Wolves are actually shooting fewer attempts as the season goes on. BUT... the team is shooting more three pointers than it has in years. Not only that... but more three pointers compared to other teams.

And this transcends multiple other coaches. Remember, Saunders and Mitchell didn't dig the shot either. I've posted the stats before... sans a season or two in the Kevin Love era... the Wolves have been 29th or 30th in the league in attempts for many years.

They're at 24th right now (28.6)... but as noted... trending downward over the past few weeks despite unloading an ok three point shooter for a stretch 4 and a 3-point specialist. That's on Thibs.

But it's about more than the Wolves shooting three pointers. Consider...

- The Wolves are 29th in opponent 3fga per game (34.6). And they're 29th in opponent 3fg% (37.3). Look at the last two games for chrissakes.

1. Detroit makes 32.6% on 33.8 attempts. They made 20 - 48 (42%).
2. SAS was last in attempts in the entire NBA (24.1) and yet they go 19 - 33 (58%)

Let's go back even further.
14
9
19
19
10
12
11
17
That's an average of 15.0 over the past 10 games. The league average is 11.0.

The Wolves haven't hit more three pointers than its opponent since 11/28 when they hit 18 out of 41 attempts vs. SAS. So the Wolves attempts are down. BUT... the defense is to blame for the disparity too.

We can blame Thibs for this. And I think we should blame the players too... because giving up a high percentage is not a fluke... and I think we can all agree that closeouts have been meh at best.

BUT... maybe we look higher up too. Small market teams shouldn't be the ones behind the curve on modern NBA philosophies. The Wolves have been for many years/decades.

Who's creating these additional three-point shots that you all want so badly? We don't have any natural facilitators besides Tyus Jones and his lack of individual scoring severely limits his game. Teague and Rose are more of the "score-first" mold and both of our wings have terrible handles.

We may have the shooters to shoot more threes, but there has to be some kind of shot creation opening those up or else you're just asking guys to yank contested perimeter jumpers in order to meet a style preference that doesn't fit the personnel. Thibs' current offense doesn't rely on motion, movement, and quick passing so it'll have to come from the players, but we just don't have those ball-handlers that can do that consistently.

To be fair to Teague he's top 5 in the NBA is assists per game. He can't do all the setup work. The rest of the team needs to step up their ball movement and playmaking. More team assists will lead to more made 3's. Wiggins, Covington and Towns are the 3 guys I'm looking at. It's also why I think Saric is a good fit in that starting lineup. He moves the ball well.

Actually 6th in assists because Harden is in there ahead of him too, but still very good. And his 3.56 A:TO ratio ranks 8th in the league (Tyus is 2nd and Rose is 25th, so clearly PG is not a problem on this team). I would say though that Teague and Rose both seem to get a majority of their assists on dumpoffs rather than finding 3-point shooters in the corners like PGs on prolific 3-point teams do. Tyus seems to be a little better at this than the other 2.

I'll say it in this thread: I'm not arguing for him to actually play based on the current rotations but I think James Nunnally might actually be a worthwhile NBA player. I think he could be better than Alex Abrines who is fairly useful.
