The whole thing is disappointing. They just should have pulled out of the pre-season and properly addressed it. I'm tired of hearing people who go off on all the issues in the US deflect in this case saying they don't know enough about this situation to comment. They're cool with spouting out their opinions when it doesn't hit their wallet. The reaction of China to this whole situation was childish and ridiculous and our league acted like cowards. Picking your spots on when you choose to be outraged is a good look. Money buys silence again. Stay woke NBA.

The major difference being China actually has major influence on those companies (they own some of them like Riot Games and are major supply chain producers for Apple) and celebrities (major endorsers) while they make up a relatively small portion of NBA revenue to date. The NBA could move on just fine from China and not take a massive hit to the current bottom line. It'd really just affect their future potential bottom line not being even bigger than what it is now. And that's a major reason why I think more people were expecting the NBA to show a spine in this case. They are one of the few entities that China doesn't have a major stake in to basically bankrupt them if they withdrew their support unlike those other groups you mentioned.

I think taking a stand for something that happening in your own country is a different sort of thing than what is happening in another country. It's certainly not that simple but I do see a difference there.

One of my friends said a few weeks ago that they teach their kids that there are consequences for actions. They told them that consequences aren't specifically good or bad but there are things that happen based on what we do. All of us support free speech but there are consequences for that. I don't think it's just the money either that's an issue for the NBA etc although that's a pretty big deal. General relationships with people in a country like China is a pretty big deal.

The only real difference is that the stakes are lower when you take a stand in a free country with free laws. What the Chinese government is doing in Hong Kong is disgusting by any ethical standard. People are getting shot by their government. The NBA took a stand in the US so people could be comfortable to pee in the way they want to pee. There's no stakes there.
