Time Travel and the Summer of 2017

Post by Lipoli390 »

If you could go back in time, knowing what you know right now, which of the following would you do as the Wolves' PBO?

Interesting question. I selected option 3, but I made some revisions. I traded for Butler, but kept Wig instead of Zach. And drafting Mitchell at 16 assumes he is passed at 13. Butler, Mitchell and Wig would be a potent wing combo.

You are missing the option of doing the Butler deal and drafting a guy like Kuzma or OG or even Collins.

You went back in a time machine, which means you know Utah will draft Mitchell at 13. And you also know that the only way we could have possibly retained our pick and still obtained Butler is by trading Wiggins instead of Zach. So I think you're stuck with option 3. :)

The time I travel premise of this thread means I can actually act on 20-20 hindsight. As a result, I can't see NOT keeping the pick and taking Mitchell. I chose #3 on the assumption that we could have gotten Butler for Wiggins and Dunn without swapping picks. Imagine Mitchell and Butler as our two wings with LaVine as our 6th man coming off the bench upon his mid-season return from knee surgery. We'd be so much better off both short term and especially long term.

If we still would have had to swap picks to get Butler even if we included Wiggins, then I would have chosen option 1. I'm not sure how well we would have done this season, but we'd be much better off long term with Mitchell, Wiggins, LaVine and Dunn.

I didn't need a time machine to take Collins over Patton. But with the benefit of time travel, I would have definitely taken Kuzma after doing the deal with the Bulls. Kuzma could have made a significant different this season -- possibly resulting in 2-5 more wins and home court advantage in the playoffs, provided that Thibs would have given him significant playing time, allowed him to shoot threes and not blunted his instincts by constantly barking at him from the bench with instructions on exactly what to do and where to go.

I am not going to answer this question because I would say 90% if not more will select option 3, and it just makes Thibs look bad. I mean I could make polls also, should of David Kahn selected Johnny Flynn or selected Steph Curry. Should Flip Sanders trade a 1st round pick for Payne, Should Flip select Greek Freak or Bazz, Should he select Dieng or Gobert.

I can get behind a poll that said would you have done the same trade we did for Butler, Not done the trade at all selected Markannan, Did Wiggins and Dunn for Butler and Draft Markkanen (assuming that was possible.

You won't answer it because it makes Thibs look bad? Lol. I don't think it makes Thibs look bad at all. This is a time-travel thread with 20-20 hindsight. I also expected most to select option 3. I was more interested in seeing if anyone would choose the one option in which we would not end up with Mitchell and hear the explanation. No one one this Board and I'm guessing very few organizations around the League expected Mitchell to be as good as he's been. As much as I don't care for Thibs as a coach or PBO, I don't ascribe even a tiny shred of blame to him for failing to keep our pick and then use it to draft Mitchell -- unless he has a time machine and failed to use it. :)

Ah, I get it...I guess it was pretty obvious now that I reread it. Here's the problem with option 3...it's likely that Mitchell under Thibs is not the same player as Mitchell under Snyder. Does he even get any minutes, or does Thibs stay with a Butler/Zach/Crawford/Rose wing rotation? Unless your time machine tells me that mitchell flourishes under thibs, I go back to option 1.

I think you make a really good point. But having seen what Mitchell can do, albeit under a much better head coach, I would still choose option 3; and if Mitchell didn't flourish under Thibs as he did under Snyder, that would be just one more reason to get Thibodeau out of here. :)

So easy - 3

I would have also kept Rubio and fired Thibs.
