Embiid/Simmon v Kat/Wiggins

Post by Duke13 »

I know it's easy to react to one game, so I'm not gonna put Philly's tandem in the HOF. But what I will say is Embiid and Simmons appear to play so well with each other, truely make each other better. I have never thought Kat and Wig play particularly well off each other, or with any type of synergy. It doesn't mean Kat and Wig can't develop some sort of chemistry, but I think it's doubtful with Wiggins' game, he doesn't have that skill set in my opinion.

I bet we don't hear the narrative Philly needs to sourround Embiid and Simmons with vets to teach them how to play, it's evident to me they know how to play.

I mean they did bring in Bayless, Amir Johnson and reddick to help.

Also let's have embiid play 50 games in a season before we say they are next great thing.

That's an interesting angle Duke.

It's worth mentioning though that the Sixers team is really built around those guys. They have Covington and Redick as floor spacers AND Covington is a lengthy wing defender and Redick actually is solid on that end. These guys basically get to do their thing and have spacing to do it. Imagine if they had to share the ball with Fultz who also likely would suck on defense. I agree with your point in general Duke but Embiid and Simmons's have some advantages around them that Towns and Wiggins haven't and that's a big deal.

One thing Wiggins specifically has going for him that's a 2-edged sword is that he is willing to defer during points of the game. This season he has seemed to do a better job scoring without having to have the ball. What Wiggins and Towns have so far in their career is ridiculous durability. I'm 5+ seasons of play they have combined to miss 1 game. We have more concerns about just Simmons with his foot injury than either of those guys out together. The synergy between Towns and Wiggins depends more on Wiggins as a playmaker and being able to hit 3's than anything else. If he becomes pretty good at either of those things...there will be a lot more good things happening. Stay tuned.

Simmons is a natural ball handler and play maker, which Wiggins is not. It makes sense that he has developed some chemistry with Embiid, who is a play maker's gift from heaven. Wiggins was drafted mostly for his elite athleticism.

I think both of these guys impact the game more than KAT/Wiggins, but as others have said, can they (especially Embiid) stay healthy? If he can consistently play 70+ games per year, he will easily become the best Center in the game IMO. Just a ridiculously talented two-way monster.

Also Last night Simmons put up one of those Steph Curry Scoop shot floaters and it looked easy and went in. If Simmons has that to his game...yikes. Also his defense looks pretty good although he is often playing with other good defenders. Regardless of the end he is on he looks fully engaged and that was a concern about this guy coming out. He is clearly putting forth plenty of effort averaging a double double and over 7 assists a game. This league is fun.

Embiid will be contending with Giannis for the best player in the league if they both stay healthy. Giannis is an exceptional talent, but if I'm given a guarantee that Embiid is playing 60+ games per year over the rest of his career, then I take him easily. It's almost unfair how talented he is at that size.

Simmons I am tapering expectations for. It's only been 15 games, and many players falter or never improve. He looks great, but how great would he look without Embiid taking so much attention and without Covington playing far above his mean?

I'd take KAT/Wiggins at this moment due to the uncertainties. But man, Simmons and Embiid have unreal potential. If they both remain remotely healthy this season with this level of production, then it is easily that sixers duo that will be the most coveted around the NBA.

I'm super excited about the future of the NBA. Lots of young talent being spread around. Eventually the Warriors will have to let a main cog go, iggy will deteriorate, and LeBron will fade. Real competitive basketball is close!

Agree, the NBA is in a good spot, although this Warriors run could last a few more years. Curry turns 30 in March, but otherwise everyone in their core group is a bit younger.

I'd take the Simmons/Embiid duo over the KAT/Wiggins duo in a heartbeat if I thought Simmons and Embiid could be counted on to stay healthy. I'm pretty confident that Simmons will, but I'm not there yet with Embiid. As me again at the end of this season.

Embiid is freakishly talented. But Simmons is an exceptional all-around talent. Those two, if healthy, are in my view the most talented twosome in the NBA.

I'll add that I'd trade Wiggins for Simmons if that were possible. A Simmons/KAT duo would be fantastic. But that's not going to happen.

I think Simmons has been great but I am reluctant to project anything about him long term because defenses will start to gameplan for his horrible shot. Rubio had those runs early in his career when he was unknown then teams adjusted. If Simmons develops a jump shot, then look out.
