Come to Minnesota. Get really stupid... and stubborn!
What is it about our cute little sports teams in this town? The Twins and Wolves have seemed to be years BEHIND other teams in their respective leagues in how they think about things... and being proactive.
For example... nobody can question how effective/important the three point shot is in today's NBA. So, where have the Wolves ranked in attempts?
- 29th this season
- 30th last season
- 29th in 2016
- 30th in 2015
- 29th in 2014
- 30th in 2013
Wait. What?
- The team is young. So it would seemingly have young players used to this new style of game.
- The team has been able to draft highly for guys who fit this style.
- The team isn't a free agent destination for many reasons... so with forward-thinking daring teams trying it... wouldn't it make sense to get ahead of it?
Nope. Nope. NOPE. Needless to say, the Wolves are arguably the worst franchise in NBA history because of this ridiculously inept run over the past 13 years that can't be matched by many other teams in any other professional league.
We're three coaches deep now and the team STILL thinks (apparently) that long two pointers are a good shot. Stop. And this current regime is doubling down with even less movement and passing.
And it's not like they haven't seen what happens when you play an antiquated style. The Twins struggled mightily for years when they stuck with a small ball + pitch to contact approach when the rest of baseball seemed to do the opposite.
I know three pointers isn't a fix-all solution. But not being a forward-thinking organization when that's one of the most critical needs for a smaller market team... it's bordering on insulting.
The only constant with the two franchises is a longtime local owner in charge while some other teams are owned by younger, less traditional people. There's a lot of old thinking that permeates from the top down. Obviously.

I don't think you can lump the Twins in with Wolves. Their track record is stellar compared to the Wolves. I do think they might have taken the wrong approach, but they have gotten some results out of it.

I can assure you, I've left Minnesota twice and I'm just as stubborn and stupid as I was while living there.

its an interesting angle Abe. I'd say the Twins at least were ahead of the curve at one point building a pretty good team on a budget. At some point its debatable when it happened you are right they were not ahead of the curve anymore and when things went bad...it went downhill. I'm not sure the Wolves other than drooling over the opportunity and then taking KG in 1995 has this franchise ever been ahead of the curve? Nevermind lets not look back and find out it won't be pretty.
It does look like based on various shooting zone breakdowns the wolves are shooting fewer long 2's than before and retaliative to the league compared to last year so that's a positive. They aren't getting to the rim at the expected level or taking 3's at a high enough rate and its easy to deduct those things are linked. I'm guessing that the Wolves won't stay in the bottom 3rd of the league scoring at the rim all year and that will help their efficiency and it will also likely get them some more 3 point opportunities. Right now this team is going through some of the struggles I expected but they had some success in wins so that was a positive. I wouldn't have been completely shocked if they struggled to the kind of start OKC has. Lets see what another 10 or so games brings. Wiggins not being able to hit a 3 reliably really hurts the team right now. Its not just him but thats a big deal. If Wiggins and Butler start being able to hit from beyond the arc even in somewhat reliable fits and starts that will help.

But Abe, my other friends on here will say there's other ways to win games.

We also see fans making an argument for qb change in the midst of a really good season. Some fans are hard to figure. Maybe fans of players more so than teams it would seem at times.

The NBA in particular seems to evoke that personal connection. I'm on the winning is all that matters train. For now, we are doing that at an unprecedented rate for our previous debacles. It may or may not last but I think our record is at or a bit in front of where I anticipated we would be at almost 20 games. Coach, GM, and the players all get part of the credit for winning and part of the blame for losing. But looking at our board, it does seem like were 6-10.

Because one must always assume the other shoe will drop since it always does.

I honestly thought the long two pointer was a tanking mechanism in past seasons. I mean, obviously we know that a long two is the worst shot in basketball right? Only if you want to lose do you continually do that! I did, I thought they wanted to lose so thats why they did it?
Do they actually NOT KNOW that they are trying to win now? Some things are so obvious it's ridiculous. At least KAT doesn't do this, some of our other guys, IDK what they are doing?
