KAT has shown he isn't the answer at the 5 defensively, but I'm not that high on DJ either considering his contract.

He buys us more time for Towns to learn how to play defense and start maturing and caring about that end of the court.

The flip side is DJ would fill a need that they're trying to get KAT to play. In that sense DJ would lessen the need for KAT to focus on defense, and thus could delay his development on that end.

It could, but I think Towns lacks just as much IQ on that end than the ability to execute. Watching someone do it right the way Thibs wants could help him mentally be ready for the role the next time he would be asked to step into it. Not everyone benefits with trial by fire and he's been a dumpster fire on that end for 2 years now and I'm just not seeing consistent improvement from him. He needs to get stronger and he needs to learn positioning better and that's not something you just pick up mid-season. I'm not a fan of learning through losing until you do it right. I'd rather someone do it right so we can win and build that culture moving forward.

Yeah, it's an interesting question. He is getting TONS of reps defending pick and rolls since he is targeted so much by opposing teams. Will he gradually improve over time like a lot of bigs do? Or is he so hopelessly behind the curve that we can pretty much conclude he will never be good defensively?

My heart says give it time, but my head says we can't afford to....
