He is another guy that could have been had all offseason. He got a vet min deal. He has had good moments with the Pels and is 25. They want to sign another guard so that probably why they want to create a roster space. They could just waive him if it comes down to it. They are keeping Dante Cunningham over him. Dante is an example of why sometimes holding onto solid but unspectacular players isn't the worst thing. He would help the wolves off the bench right now.
I agree. Cunningham had that domestic dispute thing right when his contract was up at the worst possible time. I think it turned out his GF was absolutely crazy, but it made him a tough player to sign.

Yep. I know a lot of abusers probably are never discovered... but that was one where it seems like the guy was innocent and she was the crazy one.

And as you note, at the worst possible time...
Yeah and as I remember the Wolves had people supporting him and it seemed like all the local media folks though he would be vindicated.
I'm not remembering exactly what the Wolves roster looked like numbers wise but I don't think there was a spot left for him once Flip made all his moves. He signed with the Pels on December 4 I can't remember exactly when the whole Wolves ship went down that year but adding a guy like Dante probably wasn't what they were looking to do at that point. I'm happy the guy landed in a good place and seems to be doing well.
The thing is there is always guys like Cunningham available at minimum or near minimum that provide nearly the same value at the MLE guys. I am one that thinks cap space should be divided in pools for max near max and basically vet minimum guys and players on rookie deals. It seems like most bad contracts are not bad because of the salary, but more the length. Not sure why teams have not gotten wise and choose to do shorter deals. I am sure the agents are the ones that make these long deals happen, but the deal like Peks it just make no sense to go long on it when you are the only one biding.

bleed, I have often said the same thing in the past. "Mid-Level money" guys are consistently the worst contracts in the league. These guys are simply not difference makers, but get paid a lot better than vet min guys. It's your Cole Aldrich type deal. He is almost unplayable, yet is making $7MM per. I never understand this seeming "need" by teams to load up on mid-level guys. Horrible investment.

The last couple years many players across the league have gone with shorter deals hoping to get paid.
I agree with your idea of not paying guys mid level money. Remember Aldrich's deal is at most a 2 year deal the 3rd is non guaranteed. I say sign guy like Dante for a few million like NO did with him he made 3 million per on that deal. If you like a guy pay him a couple more million to keep him over hoping the next guy is as good. If you are a good team you can attract players hoping to latch on to a good team and win. If you load up on top level players that also means there will probably be a spot with plenty of opportunity for a guy to play because you can't pay (or don't want to go to Lux tax hell) for someone else. The new CBA with those split contract will come in handy for a lot of teams. It will be interesting to see how that affects 2nd round picks in trades and in the draft. It could for example make that 2nd rounder the Kings got from Cousins a little more valuable since they could stash that player on a d-league team.
