Ever so slowly, the defense is improving. Offensively, this unit is still well below last year's version.
The defensive improvement is more impressive considering I assume scoring is still up this year. That doesn't make the offensive rating look better though!
Good to see the defensive numbers inch ahead of last year's numbers as most of us expected they would, although the offensive numbers continue to lag. I've been out of town for a couple weeks and leaving again tomorrow morning so my knowledge of the wolves play is based on box scores only, but my sense is that Thibs is making the adjustments some of us were asking for. While still a huge outlier, he is beginning to use his bench more...we even had more bench minutes than our opponent for one of the few times this year in the Houston win. He seems to be coaching KAT to play more in the style he was so successful in last year. And while Ricky's results are not always as good as last night's stellar performance, there is some evidence that thibs is allowing Ricky to paly like Ricky a little more. If Thibs continues to make the adjustments he needed to make to his approach, I think this team will make the playoffs...they just seem deeper and more talented than the teams they are battling with.
Good to hear from you LST. I hope your travels have been fruitful, because you have been missing some pretty epic games of late! Three straight close wins!
That's a very good trend Mikkeman. I like to keep things in a "year-to-date" format since all those early games still count!
While it's heartening to see the defense improved, I'm a little surprised at the offense stagnating a bit. It's still solid, but last season these guys were lighting it up.

I'd be interested in seeing the offensive rankings last year broke down in some incremental time periods like you have done this year to see if there was a progression or not.

That's tough to do because this particular lineup didn't really play much together in the first half of last season, so the initial increments would be for a really small sample size of minutes.
What we do know is that since then, they have probably logged more minutes than any other 5-man unit in the NBA.

Ah yes sorry I meant the team as a whole. Sure the young guys finished the season playing well offensively but they still had a chunk of the season to set that up even if they didn't all play together. My point is there may be significant upside on that end the 2nd of the season. Edit: ...depending on what the stats show. :)

I think there is not much point to look overall offensive ratings from last year team either because the rotation changed so much during the season. I remember that in the beginning when KG was playing and they started with 8-8 record, Wolves had a really good defensive rating but they were pretty mediocre offensively. Then their defense got gradually worse and offensively they didn't really took off before current starting five was created.
Like Q wrote, sample size for ortg and drtg for current starting five is really small before all star break last season. But if we look that they had played together 121 minuted before all star break and had ortg 122.6 and drtg 118.8, which means +3.8 net rating.
Post all star break stats for current starting five were ortg 111.4 drtg 107.5 and net rating +3.9 in 527 minutes. So their post all star break numbers were pretty close on how they have played since mid-December.
Typically average team ortg increases as season progresses. I guess that it's just because team's offense improves more during the season. So I think that this makes current progress in defensive end even more remarkable.
It's remarkable that Shabazz has gotten so much flack for being a defensive black hole and now there's some proof that he's made progress and he gets no love!

I think the flack was justified in years' past, but he has certainly stepped it up this year. We also have to keep in mind that he is doing it mostly against bench players. He is rarely the guy having to guard Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, etc. But yes, he has definitely improved on that end of the floor.

Thx Q. I've been on the road almost constantly the past month coaching and playing squash, so it's been difficult for me to follow the Wolves. Times like this is when this board is most valuable to me, because it lets me know what's going on beyond the box score. Maybe I should stay on the road, because they're clearly playing better without me!
BTW, a couple Philly connections in my travels. Two weeks ago I was in your town coaching my kids in the Urban Squash Nationals. My 5-man boys team won the Under 19 national championship...so proud of these kids who come from unbelievably challenging environments. This weekend I'm playing, not coaching, in a tournament in Manhattan. My partner and I won our first round this morning and play next at 6pm against a couple Philly studs...one of the guys is the pro at the Merion Cricket Club, so the match tonight feels a little like Wolves vs Warriors!
Keep up the good work, guys...this is my source for following the team while I can't watch them.
Good stuff LST. Congrats on your team's victory and best of luck to you and your partner!
Squash has always been a curiosity to me, but I do know it's pretty big here out east. I've just never had occasion to watch it or play it. You've piqued my interest!
