Asshat move, but...

Post by Big O [enjin:13874644] »

First let me say I hate the Gibson deal. I think most except Thibs agree. But given that deals aren't official until tomorrow at noon can the Wolves still back out and either make a better deal or pick up more useful free agents?

Technically they probably could, but a) what a horrible precedent to set as a franchise in terms of attracting other free agents here, and b) Thibs is all in on Gibson - he ain't reversing course.

I will not argue that it isn't an overpay, but by how much? Yeah, the Patterson deal seems pretty good, but Zach Randolph got 12 mil per year.

I like the Gibson signing. He doesn't check the 3-point shooting box, but he checks everything else. I will be very surprised if he is not our starting PF to open the season.

Yeah, we can't afford to do such. What we do will/(has to) be set in stone. I'm not happy with Thibs' Taj signing, but we need to (myself included) reserve judgement for the end of the offseason. Maybe he pulls something out of his ass to put forth a better bench than last year. It is possible. Am I confident? No. But I am hopeful.

It would be more likely and reasonable of the Wolves could sign a guy and if Taj took a little less money to do so they could ask about that. It seems the Wolves are pretty far away from that making much of a difference. Taj and Teague would have to give up a couple million per to make much difference.

I could see them going to Gibson and being like, hey.. we are short 1m to sign X player. Would you be willing to adjust the deal? No one would think twice if the official deal was announced to be 2yr 26 mill or something and no one would ever really know because it's not uncommon for the reported $ being slightly off.

Gibson wasn't exactly the type of player I would have wanted and he got a little more than I would have liked, but I'm still cool with it in the larger scheme of things.

Backing out of the deal completely would screw this franchise so bad. No agent would let their players talk to us in free agency in the future. That would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Or the groin, actually.

I agree with Grey though, that Thibs' relationship with Gibson might be the sort of thing that could get us a million in wiggle room . . . if needed for a good player.

Apparently, we only have around $1 million in cap space left, so squeezing another million per year out of Gibson's contract (giving us about $2 million cap room) wouldn't significantly enhance our free agent opportunities since it's no more than the typical vet minimum. What we could potentially do is change the deal to a 3-yr, $30 million deal -- giving us about $4 million more cap room for a total of around $5 million. That could be a difference-maker for some free agents, but I think it would still come up short for CJ Miles. And we'd be stuck with another guaranteed year at $10 million for what would then be a 34 year old backup PF. Not sure what you guys think of stretching his contract to 3 years, but it seems like something Gibson might agree to if it meant making the team stronger.

Sucks we signed Tak and Thibs couldn't call his old friends in Boston to help them unload some talent to sign Howard. Jae Crowder please.

That makes a lot of sense and should happen. Go on spotrac and look at the sf and sgs left. We definitely could get two decent ones with 5 mil and the RE. I highly doubt it does happen though as Taj and Teague both see,ed to agree to two years because of Butler potentially leaving in two years.
