Nunez channels his inner Martell Webster

Post by longstrangetrip [enjin:6600564] »

This is a combo Twins/Wolves topic, but I'm putting it in the Wolves forum because it gets more traffic.

I don't know if any of you saw the end of the Twins game last night. The Yankees had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the 10th, when the batter hit a routine grounder to Nunez at short. Rather than fielding it cleanly and throwing it home for the force out, he juggled it and inexplicitly threw to first. This resulted in perhaps the only walk-off 6-3 putout in history!

I couldn't help but think of other great bonehead moments in Minnesota sports history, and the first one that came to mind was Webster's spectacular game-ending dunk two years ago...which would have been more spectacular if we hadn't been down by three at the time!

Ah...memories

I'll stick up for Nunez a little on this one. He should have fielded the ball cleanly, I couldn't tell if that ball hopped up a little or if he was thinking about the throw before he fielded it, but that's a play a major league infielder needs to make 99% of the time. That part is inexcusable.

I'll excuse the throw to first though. After the error he wasn't getting the out at home so I don't mind him preventing Headly from getting a game winning hit. I would still prefer Nunez throw home just in case the runner stumbled or something weird happened.

I didn't see the game, but when I read it in the boxscore, I thought he forgot how many out there were.
