There's something awesome about knowing your NBA team has a gold medalist, and we'll never have that with those two (USA's too dominant in that setting). Not to mention, when teammates play together at Olympic competitions, they seem to grow together. I remember Steph and Klay talking about it last season and before that, I want to say DeMarcus and Rudy said it brought them closer. I bet KD and Russ, CP3 and Blake made comments as well, but I can't say that for sure. Our guys will play for teams that have no shot at winning gold, and will have to do Herculean things to get them to that level.

I don't know. Just a thought.

Yeah, I think it would be helpful if Wiggins/AB played together on a team that had a chance to win something more significant than the Latin American tournament they are in currently. They ran into a buzzsaw yesterday in the person of Scola, who always seems to elevate his game when he's playing for national pride, but I still think they have a good chance of winning this tournament...it's just not the same as winning a real international tournament, like the Olympics. Still, I think a good run in this tournament will cement Wiggins' and AB's relationship, and give AB his best chance of doing something in the NBA.

By the way, I think the Olympics are one of the main reasons we now have Wiggins. Kevin Love was just a role player when the 2012 Olympics began, but he eventually became an important player in winning that gold. I think LeBron recognized that Love was willing to do the dirty work on the court, and that eventually led to his insistence that the Cavs trade for him. Sometimes good fortune takes an unusual path.

Cam - I am with you. It also seems to help those young guys take the next step in the NBA ladder by being part of the USA program. Wiggins and Towns won't be. Hopefully soon LaVine will be.

There has to be a couple examples of non-USA players that took a step forward playing for their national teams as well.

I do agree various USA players have stepped up their game being part of Team USA. I remember KG and McDyess went to a whole different level after they played well for team USA. I think Love took a step forward as well but it also hurt him one year because he was kinda worn out. Of course some of those guys likely would have taken steps either way but it was a nice springboard and experience no doubt and I do think it has made some guys better.

LST, I like your AB optimism, maybe Wiggins could somehow find a repoire with him and light a fire.

monster - I agree, but I just think being part of the USA program is an easier path to elite NBA level. At least Canada has what it seems is an up and coming team.

You typically play for Team USA in major tournaments like the Olympics AFTER you become elite. Not much room on those teams for guys with potential.

The world championships during the second off year from the Olympics is usually when the young guys take that step. Love, Durant, Westbrook, PG, Harden. That was their tournament to shine as stars. AD is really the only one since Lebron and Melo who's been an Olympic team guy from the get go (went as the college guy his first go around and will probably be starting his second). But the program itself has all kinds of levels of guys playing. Olympics is obviously the top level, but the world championship team is usually stacked enough to give the main team a run for their money in practice.

That's why I specifically said Olympics

The rest of us are talking about the national programs as a whole, not just one tournament. The steps guys take to elite happen while they play for Team USA, just in other tournaments like the world championships. People on here are talking about the competition within the program being a benefit to take players to the next level. The program doesn't just exist for the Olympics. Guys like Damien Lillard will probably never play on an Olympic team, but got better because he played for the world championship team as part of the Team USA program. Wiggins and Towns won't get that benefit on any level because they don't have any hard competition for spots on their national teams. Team USA has that competition level on multiple levels of the program which pushes guys to get even better or not play at the higher levels.
