Tyus Jones and Kris Dunn
It's funny how Tyus Jones has gone completely missing from all the chatter about Kris Dunn. It's also a little ironic that the folks claiming Rubio "isn't a winner" don't mention nary a word about Tyus Jones and his body of work in one year at Duke versus Dunn's multiple years at Providence, Jim Souhan included. Isn't Tyus Jones the very definition of a winner?
I was for drafting Dunn, but before we crown him the next Gary Payton or Russell Westbrook, perhaps we should see if he can first beat outplay our 2nd string PG, much less be an upgrade over Ricky Rubio.

And not to mention the extra depth at PG with Zach... Or our FA Jamal Crawford!

How many years older is Dunn than Tyus? If he can't beat him out this year he never will. That would make it a phenomenal draft pick wouldn't it?

I don't think you realize how bad rookies can be, even ones that eventually become good NBA players. Tyus Jones beating out Dunn, if Thibs even entertains that idea since Dunn is "his guy", will be more about Dunn's inexperience and poor play in the NBA than Tyus suddenly becoming a world beater.

Q, you're the guy that tends to form opinions on rookies after 20 games. I'm much more open to having patience with these guys than you've been.
Tyus hardly played last year. Dunn has two years maturity and growth on him. Lord help us if the #5 pick can't beat out Tyus.
Re: Tyus Jones and Kris Dunn
Wolfson (who is a Tyus homer so take it for what it's worth) has tweeted that Tyus looks in better shape more cut and at a lower body fat. I'm curious to see how he looks both physically and playing games in summer league. I believe Tyus could still be a nice player especially if he proves to be able to hit 3 point shots at a healthy rate. Obviously his defense needs to improve but he will have to be an amazing defender to be worthwhile if he can't hit 3's so that's my first priority for him to prove he can do it. His feel for the game is off the charts it's truly impressive some of the things he is abl to do at suck a young age with no physical advantages to fall back on.
I would expect Dunn to get minutes over Tyus in the regular season just based on his defensive abilities and I think he is a guy that looks like he can play smart basketball if that's what he is told to do especially playing PG. He will likely have some reasonably competent players on the court with him so he won't have to be a hero or whatever.

If drafting Dunn and having Tyus means we will never see another second of Zach at point guard all I can say is...HALLELUJAH

I posted this is another thread. Dun would have ranked 3rd in last years draft class if he stayed in. He would have pushed Tyus to 6th
Re: Tyus Jones and Kris Dunn
Just by looking Dunn's stats, it seems that he was better offensively last year. He had higher 2P% and more assists and slightly better assists/TO ratio.
Since Jones is much younger, we should expect that he would have improved more from last year than Dunn. So I think that it is not that far fetched to assume that Jones would be offensively better than Dunn right now. But since Dunn is much better defender, I think he should be better overall player already.

Re: Tyus Jones and Kris Dunn
Good news that Tyus looks bigger and more cut than last year. I'm not surprised...he's driven to be good, and he had to realize how physically overmatched he was last year.
We have to remember that Tyus just turned 20 last month. We didn't get to watch him much in meaningful situations last year, but there were flashes of promise. It's unusual for a rookie PG to confidently and successfully direct an offense, but Tyus had better than a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio...similar to what he had in college. He had a difficult time staying in front of the guy he was guarding, and yet he showed some smarts and quick hands on defense and averaged almost a steal per game in only 15 mpg. The biggest disappointment for me was how poorly Tyus shot the ball...only 36% and 72% from the line. But shooting has not been in issue for him in the past, so I look for improvement this year.
With a year under his belt, Tyus should come to Vegas with a lot more confidence. I'm excited to see is he has what it takes to be a solid NBA backup PG.
