When if ever will Ricky Rubio be traded?

Post by Lipoli390 »

I'm pretty tired of the Rubio speculation. He's been rumored to be on the trading block ever since we drafted him. I think Thibs is smart enough to know he should keep unless/until he has a proven PG who can help the team overall as much as or more than Ricky does. So here's a poll to take stock of where everyone is at.

When, if ever, do you think the Wolves will trade Ricky?

Im thinking 2+ years at this point. It might even end up being a financial move if all these pups we have grow as we hope. No hurry though as I outlined that there doesn't seem to be a very good market at this time.

These polls asking what the Wolves will do end up being nothing more than guesses. The better question IMO, and one that will always drive discussion is what should they do?

I think Rubio or Dunn, but likely Rubio, will be traded by next season's trade deadline. I don't neccessarily believe that is what they should do, though that would depend upon what they get in return, and what their free agency plans are for the position. My preference is to keep Rubio until such time as Dunn proves to be the better player, if ever.

Bottom line, do what will make the team better, not just this upcoming year, but going forward and I'll be happy.

SP -- Sometimes what you think should be done is the best predictor of what will be done. I think you're analysis of what should be done is spot on -- keep Rubio until Dunn proves to be the better player if ever. I think that's exactly what Thibs is going to do because I think he's a smart, logical thinker and not a big risk taker. He loves Dunn, but Thibs has been very clear that it's all about performance. And he also stressed the big adjustment Dunn will have going from college to the NBA. There's no ways Thibs will trade Ricky before he has the chance to fully evaluate Dunn based on his actually NBA game performance. The only caveat is if he can get a comparably good PG in return for Ricky.

I voted never. He will end up as a HOF PG that will help lead this team to 5 titles before Kris Dunn takes over as the full time starter and leads us to 3 more while Rubio comes off the bench.

Here are three things I think I know:

1) Thibs is privy to the same on/off stats for Rubio as we are, and uses them in decisions about what to do with Ricky.

2) Thibs sees a lot of young talent on this roster, and doesn't want to team it with an inexperienced PG

3) It's difficult for college players to adjust to the NBA, and especially difficult for PGs.

I don't see Dunn as being ready to run this team as well as Ricky for at least a couple years, so I voted 2+ years (with a possibility of it being never).

I gotta say once again, you don't pass up the best shooters in the draft to take a point guard you intend to play only 15 minutes per night. And personally I don't think Dunn and Rubio are a good fit playing next to each other. Somehow they have to clear a path for Dunn to play. Not only that, Dunn is the first stamp Thibs has been able to put on the organization. Thibs inherited Rubio, and the first thing he does is bring in another point guard. Ricky may not get traded this summer, but my money would be on him getting moved by the trade deadline.

Dunn was a highly touted prospect, whom we are all happy to have. But, do any of you think that we took him (largely because he was the BPA) because we thought we could flip him to Chicago for Butler? I am very excited to have him, regardless of his position, but it makes me wonder if Thibs did not plan on having both Ricky and Dunn.

There's no way he drafted Dunn for the sake of getting Butler just to strike out. He would have known Boston was offering up the third pick to the Bulls to get Dunn and that wasn't enough. He took BPA, fielded offers for both his PG's and decided to keep both.
