All "traded for cash by Minnesota" team

Post by MikkeMan »

PG Mario Chalmers (Minnesota traded him for cash and couple of future 2nd rounders. I think this was a good deal but since cash was involved I count him eligible for my list)
SG Alessandro Gentile (I understood that he was traded for cash as well)
C Rudy Gobert (Minnesota traded 26th pick that they used for Roberson with Malcolm Lee to future 2nd rounder and cash. So they could have drafted Gobert instead of that.)
PF Nikola Mirotic (Minnesota traded Mirotic for Malcolm Lee, Norris Cole and cash 2011.)
SF Chandler Parsons (Minnesota traded Parsons back to Houston for cash 2011. I don't know if it was already agreed in first deal between MInnesota and Houston where they received Parsons that they will trade him back to Houston. So I'm not 100% sure if Minnesota could have kept him but since trade was listed Parsons for cash, I include him as well.)

Frustrating for sure. I feel like anytime you (at team) trade a pick for cash you are saying one of the following things:
-You don't trust your scouting teams instincts to find talent
-You lack roster flexibility due to other mistakes
-You have no plan to develop talent
-You are cheap

Bleed, I think reason #4 is the biggest on that list.

I don't think Rio moves the needle much for this team, at least not as much as the doomsday folks from that draft night would have you believe.

Gobert, Parsons, and Mirotic would, however and the team would look totally different. I'm glad we have Towns in the end and it might not be possible with any of those guys.

It is really frustrating that Minnesota has sold so many 2nd round and even late 1st round picks for cash. Just looked drafts from years 2011-2014 and saw that following players have been drafted with 26th or later pick:

2011: Jimmy Butler 30th, Chandler Parsons 38th, Isaiah Thomas 60th
2012: Jae Crowder 34th, Draymond Green 35th, Khris Middleton 39th, Will Barton 40th
2013: Rudy Gobert 27th, Allen Crabbe 31st
2014: Nikola Jokic 41st, Dwight Powell 45th, Jordan Clarkson 46th

It is very well possible that Butler, Thomas, Green and Middleton will be in all star game this year.

Yes, one of the more underrated aspects of Minnesota's futility as a franchise is how few good players they have found outside of the lottery (normally we focus on all the poor picks in the lottery). We have had tons and tons of other 1st and 2nd rounders over the years that have either been sold for cash or wasted on someone that didn't pan out.

The thing is though on the picks that we trade away are the wolves making the selection or is another team telling us who to pick and we select them

Wolves have been pretty bad outside the lottery. Kahn at least can say he had Belly on his watch. Probably his best other pick outside the lottery was Hummel. Yeah...and the Wolves had a ton of picks while Kahn was here so he had ample opportunities. In fairness Malcolm Lee if he could have been healthy looked like he may have been a nice enough player but that didn't work out.

As it has been said sometimes accumulation of assets does t pay if you don't have spots for them. That has been a problem for the Wolves for quite a few years.

So when Flip was in chrarge I was feeling like we had a shot to find a couple gems. At least the Guys he was picking in the 2nd round were legit fringe NBA talent type players. Lo Brown, GR3 both are guys that fit that mold. Bogan the floor spacing big that's stashed in Europe looks like a brilliant pick. Flip traded/sold some picks and missed on some guys but there was signs of encouragement. Tyus at least looks like he can play one side of the ball.

Now Flip is gone and we don't know if he was the guy that made these picks good or decent or if he leaned a lot on someone or group of people that identified some of this talent. Maybe Milt or Calvin Booth have a really good eye. Maybe just having someone that isn't David Kahn being the deciding factor makes a big difference idk. Lol

The Spurs have been getting that lower level talent for years. GS has Key guys that were outside the lottery players. OKC has found some pretty useful guys outside the lottery also. Plenty of other playoff level teams do it too. You HAVE to identify some players AND develop them if you want to be really good. You have to find a lower level FA that's worthwhile here and there. I know Inam preaching to the choir here but yeah Inam hoping for the best but nearly expecting the worst. Nothing.
