With the Vikings demise the Wolves HAVE to make the playoffs
Re: With the Vikings demise the Wolves HAVE to make the playoffs
Teddy's injury is likely 12 months before he even can think football. That means that he has a built in excuse for 2017 as well as he's not going to be seeing contact until the start of next season. Realistically we are looking at 2 seasons, which is a lifetime in football. We could be well out of anything near perennial contender by then. It's not panic to look at a QB now, it is the right thing to do.

An acl tear is nothing like it used to be. Until we know the true extent of his injury and how the surgery went then it would be a mistake to assume the worst case scenario like many fans seem to be doing. I'm curious why you say we could be well out of contention within two years? Our team is just realizing its potential and most of our core players are 26 or younger. We also are blessed with one of the best cap space gurus in all of sports, which should allow us to keep most of our core in place. We are all foaming at the mouth to win right now, but the reality is that we have the best track record of drafting in the last 4 or so years and there is no reason to believe that this won't continue. As a team we are in a great overall position. I hope we stay the course, and I firmly believe that this current staff will do just that.

I think he's saying 2 years is a lifetime in football... as has been proven many times. Peterson is already past the age where RBs can effectively carry the ball 300+ times season after season.
It's a QB-driven league. The Vikings were an anomaly of sorts. Sustained excellence in recent seasons has centered around the position. So to "punt" on that for one season (and possibly longer) is a risky way to move forward.

I don't think anyone is giving up on the season there is just varying degrees of what should be done now and looking farther in the future. Someone mentioned let's sit back and wait and see what the outcome of the surgery is etc before getting too crazy.
A good friend of mine has a wife finishing up her doctoral work in PT. They are now my go to people when there is an injury. she has been spot on the last few months with what she thought various lower leg injuries were watching the videos. She also has had numerous knee injuries herself playing sports so she knows that well. It turns out her first knee injury she dislocated her knee also tearing her ACL and MCL. She had other significant knee injuries since then but has been quite healthy for a few years. Somehow she has time to play various rec leagues including basketball volleyball and softball.
I don't want to downplay Teddy's injury but it might be reasonable to take a deep breath and see what happens. I don't see a no-brainer move to do right now even if his career was in jeopardy. Last night I was freaking out for a while hearing terrible things and it was still bad not not as bad as it could have been which is a relief.

He's an all pro guy though, so would probably cost us a starter and a couple high picks...especially since we have little bargaining power. Question: would you give up Anthony Barr, a 2nd and a 4th for Rivers? I think that's an example of the price tag for a QB that would move the needle, and I don't do it.
The available free agents are scary...Manziel, Jackson , etc. More likely Spielman finds a team with three QBs on their roster they trust, and gives up a couple picks for the reliable non-starting vet in the trio. Anybody know who that might be?
Would you take a flyer on Manziel? It's an interesting idea.

Nope. Dude has major issues and until they're resolved he's not in position to help himself, much less an NFL team.

True, and I guess we should learn our lesson about taking Cleveland scrubs (see Anthony Bennett). Speaking of AB, is Cam still pouting about the Dunn pick?
Re: With the Vikings demise the Wolves HAVE to make the playoffs
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but as much as I like Teddy (who doesn't), I believe based upon what has been said this team needs to move forward with the idea that he'll never again play the game. This injury is many times more serious that AD's, and the fact that it was a non-contact injury that could have resulted in losing his leg he's more than likely going to have serious issues just with the mental aspect of playing again.
If I'm Spielman and there was any chance I could get Rivers from SD for a couple first round picks I jump on it. The biggest question that separated the Vikings from other title contenders was the question of will Teddy progress into a game changer from a game manager. Bring Rivers in and this team is an instant contender for the next 3-5 years.
I know it's the longest of long shots, and I love Teddy as much as the next guy, but if it can be done without decimating the team's depth you have to do it.

Im sort of confused with your self realization that he will never play the game again. Maybe you've heard more than I have, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but as of now I have heard a torn acl and possible structural damage. Meaning it is likely he tore a part of his meniscus or other cartilage. A Pcl or mcl tear would likely have been reported at the same time as his acl tear was. Although there is a significant risk of reinjury, there is no reason to believe he cannot return to form as a pocket passer which is what he is. This type of injury is a lot more concerning when talking about a rg3 or a Vick type of player. Teddy has always been able to run, but he never did rely on that aspect of his game. i would be very surprised if he did not return next season. With the advancement of the medical field I see one option of him not returning and that is by his own personal accord.

Sure it's a QB driven league, yet we are still not a team whom has the QB driving. 14 Passing TDs is not supposed to get you 11 wins, yet we accomplished that. We are not destroyed by this injury as many would state. We still have plenty of promise and as long as we have a QB not making mistakes we still have a great opportunity to win games ala Denver last season.
