I'm not voting I feel pretty much the same way I did about the Finals. Anything (except Butler) could happen.

I'll say a couple more things Jon K said with Souhan in their podcast.

Both guys said so many Wolves fans have been very much against all the ideas of trades for veteran player like Butler. He said it seems like fans really want to see this group through and they have a real attachment to them. Both said this is a little surprising because fan bases usually have more impatience than this. Jon said he has the feeling that Layden and Thibs are a little more wanting to go towards the playoffs than fans might but it sounded like while they want to win sooner than later they weren't win at all costs type but looking for some reasonable ways to get better sooner rather than later. They thought fans outlook was neat and I do too.

Jon said he doesn't have a good read on how they feel about the draft prospects but he thought the preference would be to trade the pick for a vet but he doesn't see that happening because he doesn't see any realistic fits. As I said in the draft thread he said Buddy makes a lot of sense and Murray as well because they need shooting. He also mentioned Chriss as a guy to keep your eyes on who obviously isn't a finished product. So yeah I think basically he would say about anything could happen and he has a lot more info than we do!

I'd love to see Payne dealt for a 2nd rounder that could land us Zimmerman.

That would be fantastic. I'd be happy trading Payne for pick #60.

Pretty much describes Payne as an NBA player.

Question for the board, and I'm not in favor of it, but it's worth asking.

It's tough to gauge what exactly the No. 5 pick could get us. It seems to me that Thibodeau wants to add a wing, and I've come to that conclusion mainly based on his want to add Jimmy Butler. The pick alone won't get him that and I doubt he'll pay the required price.

So, would you trade the pick for Kyle Korver? I have no clue what the value of our pick actually is. Fans tend to overrate picks all the time and that could be possible again here.

Korver brings the shooting Thibodeau wants, he's familiar with his coaching, he grew tremendously on the defensive end under his coaching, he was named an All-Star a year ago by coaches, he's experienced post-season play, and has been key to winning teams.

So the question is, especially for those that voted to trade the pick for a veteran: Is this a deal you'd be okay with? If this is the kind of veteran we can bring in with that pick, are you behind it?

I'm not, but I bring it up because that could be the type of return the pick itself is capable of. I'm not clued in like that around the league.

Cam, I wouldn't sign off on trading #5 for someone who will turn 36 during the season next year. But I'm with you, I really don't know what veteran that pick can fetch.

I think the way you bring this up and frame it is worth discussing. My answer is...Hell No! to moving the pick for Korver. Your scenario is worth considering what value does it really have.

For fun and for context let's look back a few years to a time that the Wolves acquired the #5 pick that we used on Rubio. They gave up a valued vet in Mike Miller and a youngish vet coming of a career high scoring season in Foye. There were more pieces but that was the real pieces of note. That's sort of a long time ago but as poorly as it turned out it wasn't completely unfair for what the Wizards were looking to do. Foye probably still had some decent value at the time. Years later Miller was a guy contending teams still wanted.

As I posted in the draft thread the history of the players taken with the #5 pick make me very included to hold onto it and draft someone over trading for a vet.

As for the idea that Thibs is interested in Butler for #5 well that's wishful thinking. What team wouldn't be interested in Butler of the price was right? Obviously Thibs would love to get Butler. That's his guy and Butler seems to embody so much of What Thibs is but that's not going to happen so I just can't read much into it. That's the way I frame it anyway.

Yeah, I thought about the Miller/Foye deal yesterday and it kind of brought along that type of thinking tonight. It really is quite difficult to find a realistic veteran that could be had for No. 5. That's why I threw out Korver as an example. No doubt we want someone better, someone younger, someone either in their prime or approaching their prime, BUT I'm wondering if we're wrong for thinking that our pick has that type of value.

At some point or another, we've discussed trading the pick for Jimmy Butler, DeMarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors, and several other All-Star caliber players. I'm suggesting that maybe we're falling into the trap of believing our pick has too much value. Instead of those types of guys, perhaps a more realistic list would include: Kyle Korver, Rudy Gay, George Hill, Robin Lopez, Kenneth Faried, Thaddeus Young. Nice players, but nothing spectacular.

If that's the case, I'd rather not trade the pick for most of those guys. Again, I don't know the perceived value of the pick. Maybe we're (including myself) being too optimistic about what the No. 5 pick could bring back.

What I will add is that I think the type of player that has the appropriate value for #5 that's sort of a young vet or guy in their prime...why would a team want to trade that guy? They are probably a nice player and maybe even signed to a good deal. Crowder is an example of a guy that if you believe he is the guy we saw this year might be appropriate value but no way Boston would give him up. So you have to look for teams with surplus players to deal.

I mean the team that does make sense to make a deal is Philly so we have thrown around Okafor and Noel but it seems like maybe those guys might be worth a bit more than #5. Maybe Saric for #5 is more likely but what is his value right now around the league? No idea.

Another team with a surplus is the Blazers but their wings are various levels of FAs so you aren't dealing #5 for Crabbe and maybe something else but if he were signed to a reasonable long-term deal then it would be more interesting. But then would the Blazers want to trade him? Maybe not. Plus like I said before salaries can be tricky trading for a vet when it's mostly the draft pick you are using to get player that's already been in the league which would be a problem in bringing in a guy like Faried.

So yeah long story short thisnisnalot of the reason why I have been saying for quite a while that I didn't see them moving the pick magically strictly for a player that's already been in the league. I think it's rare to get value that way and I think Layden and Thibs are wise enough to know that. Plus I think Thibs has more of a soft spot for developing players than he typically gets credit for.

Lastly I think the #5 pick has a pretty good value and that's partly why a team like the Wolves will likely hold onto it and pick a player or maybe trade down a few spots. Other teams will value it but the team that has it values it also because they can get a player they like.
