I'm a little surprised by the reaction here. I always thought the guy was kind of a jerk and I was a little worried when we brought him back that he might do what Kobe is doing this year (except with more bullying and less selfishness), but he's been a model veteran since coming back from what I can tell. I highly doubt he's sitting because G took the starting spot from him. He's just way too competitive, even at his age. He worked hard (and effectively) when he was on the court, supported his teammates when he was on the bench, and always praised the young guys and the future of the team. Plus he's a living connection to our team's history.

I assumed he was done after this year given that he hasn't played for a couple months now. And if this is all he can give us next year, I'd guess I'd also prefer he retire as long as he still has a presence on the team somehow. That would free up a little salary and a roster spot. But I wouldn't mind that much if he stayed. A 15th roster spot is not THAT crucial (we're already not playing Payne and Rudez). And 8 million next year would be nice, but it's just one more year and we're not quite ready to make a free agent splash anyway. But this is beside the point. The question shouldn't be "how bad would it be if KG came back?" but "what is the right way to say goodbye to the past?"

The guy deserves better than for us to be debating whether he's worth 8 million for that last roster spot. He deserves a heartfelt goodbye, a last chance to play in front of the fans and hear their appreciation. This guy WAS our team for over a decade. Giving him a respectful sendoff would help to root our future in our history, the only winning history we've had. It would send a message to the young guys that this is a franchise and a fanbase worth staying and fighting for, that they can revive and surpass what was once a good team and has since been a laughingstock. It would also help send a message to the whole league that we are a professional, classy organization, in sharp contrast to the fiasco the Lakers are going through in Kobe's last year. And most importantly, it just seems like the right thing to do.

Drew, I'm not sure what else the franchise could do at this point to prove their appreciation for KG. He was brought back like a king last season to a home crowd filled with adoring fans. He was signed to a very generous 2-year contract even though his most recent past with Brooklyn indicated that he was a part-time player at best.

KG's biggest value as a player and mentor has been when he's actually been able to play. But it's pretty clear that he either doesn't want to or can't play anymore. So why not bring him back next year as a special assistant in charge of big man development? Because that's essentially what he is doing right now anyway.

I'm all for that. I just think he should play a couple minutes in these last few games and hopefully it's announced these are his last games so people can give him one last hurrah on the court.
