- Said Shabazz is a "very, very, very valuable player" and that he needs more love. I disagree. I think he gets plenty and isn't as valuable as he hypes him up to be.
- He spent far too long talking about some throwback story of his life that involved Kenny Smith and Ed Pinckney while the actual game was going on. I'm okay with some stories, but make them short and to the point. Sounded like he was rambling and having a conversation that could have been shared off the air.
- He has a super duper man crush on Gorgui Dieng. Early in the game, Dieng took a defensive rebound and went coast to coast and finished over Collison and Curry. It wasn't all that impressive from an offensive standpoint, but rather terrible defense from the Kings backcourt. He then continued to say Dieng should be in the Skills Challenge next year and give Towns a run for his money, which I found to be laughable. G's too damn clumsy for any of that. I've watched that guy fall on his ass because of air being too heavy. The Petersen/Dieng love affair just gets annoying after time.
I actually like Jim Pete. Regarding "Bazz needing love", I interpreted that as coming from the coaching (softer touch from Sam vs. hard ass Sam). Bazz is valuable as an energy/scorer. He obviously has his flaws too. Still. It's pretty obvious he belongs in the NBA and is probably going to have a decent career as a role player.
Regarding Dieng, I have no problem with handing him some praise. Dieng gets overlooked a lot. Yet at the of the game he's putting up another 18 pts/13 rebounds and was +18. I have a hunch that if Pete was gushing on Bjelica or Towns, that would be okay with you.... Just saying we're all fans and have our favorite players for whatever reasons.
I like both Petersen and Benz, but they both have their faults and I think it's perfectly fine to talk about them just like we talk about the players on the court.
Bazz gets rightfully criticized for the things he does poorly: tunnel vision offensively, not making the simple pass offensively, losing his man defensively, poor rotations defensively, not getting back in transition. All of those are legitimate downsides to his game and those are usually what people talk bad about him for. He's very much a one-way player right now, which to me does not make him "very, very,
very" valuable like Petersen says and I do get annoyed when people say things that aren't true or at least semi-true.
I wouldn't expect you to have any problem with the Dieng hyping since you do so much of it yourself. He's one of your favorite players to talk about on the board, and that's your prerogative. Dieng's solid, even more solid off the bench, and I think he's valued fairly here and pretty much everywhere that discusses the Wolves. He's a starter on a bad team, probably a pretty good bench big on a winning team. That's my opinion on him and I don't see how that's unjust. As for the game overall tonight, he played well -- really well. I've never been opposed to giving credit where credit is due. I'm also not afraid to bring up how awful he played against Golden State, which forced him to the bench because he simply couldn't match up. I consider my takes realistic, but as is the case with sports, a lot of things are just opinion.
The bigger point to my post was how Petersen took one regular play and made it seem like it was some freak-of-nature play for a big. I think Gorgui took two strong hand dribbles and then two-hand dunked all while doing this against two less-than-stellar point guards. It was a play that worked, and I'm glad it did, but does anybody really think Dieng has ball skills that are out of this world and deserving of a Skills Challenge nominee (along with Towns, Cousins, Davis, Green)? I doubt it. Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
