Flip

Not sure if anyone else reads Sid's column, but here is from his jottings section:

Saunders hurting

An unlimited number of prayers should be said for the recovery of former Gophers player and current Timberwolves president of basketball operations and head coach Flip Saunders, who is seriously ill and resting at the University of Minnesota Hospital.

Saunders acquired pneumonia while taking chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and the word around Target Center on Wednesday night at the Lynx game was things are not good. His son, Ryan, who is a Timberwolves assistant coach, has spent most of his time in the hospital, along with the rest of the family, at his father's bedside.

My heart bleeds for Flip, who I've been close to since he stepped on the Williams Arena court in September 1973, 42 years ago. We've spent a lot of time together. He's a tremendous father, and his wife, Debbie, is a superwoman.

Things were going great for him with the Timberwolves and he was looking forward to an outstanding season. It is such a sad story that it brings tears to my eyes.

Prayers for Flip.

The body can do amazing things in terms of healing itself. My dad had surgical procedure a few years ago, and developed fluid in the lungs afterwards. He was not good, and it looked like we were going to lose him. But he hit a turning point and with a determined effort on increasing lung capacity he is still with us today and doing pretty good. Hopefully Flip can hit that turning point and start down the path to recovery.

Sad to hear. Regardless of how one judges him as a POBO or coach, there is no question he has an enthusiasm and love for the organization. He also seems like an all-around good guy. Hope he can pull out of this!

I was afraid things were not good. The latest Male Pattern Podcast you betcha basketball show (it's pretty good we are lucky to have Jon K.) when Souhan brought up the topic of Flip Jon K. wanted to stay respectful but what he said made it sound like things were not going well while being fairly purposely vague. It's a sad deal right now a real cloud over the organization hopefully Flip can beat this thing.

That does sort of beg the question though....Should reporters like Sid and Zgoda be spouting off or speculating on Flip's condition when the family has been pretty explicit about keeping things private? Or does that fall within the realm of good reporting?

I prefer the Jon K. approach......

Selfishly I'd sure like to know how he is doing and what the prognosis is. I have this fear that one day out of the blue I'll turn on Sportscenter and his picture will be up with dates underneath it. That's probably going to happen with Lamar Odom any day now.

But if the family wants to keep it private I can certainly understand and respect their wishes. But it's hard as an admirer of Flip to not know what his condition truly is.

If Schefter was covering the NBA we'd probably already have a picture of the medical report. That info shouldn't come out though especially if the family doesn't want it to come out.

A bit of good news not regarding Flip, it's being reported that Lamar Odom is awake and talking now - http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/Lamar-Odom-Coma-Update-Breathing-333317841.html?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_LABrand
