How did he earn it? The preseason hasn't even started

Carlos Danger wrote:I would be open to trading Martin. But similar to Alex, I wouldn't want to see a trade just to dump someone. It has to make sense. Martin can play. He has value and is reasonably priced. Will be interesting to watch this unfold. The good news is that LaVine is looking good early and we have some other options at SG. But make no mistake, Martin was a pure scorer and an excellent free throw shooter which comes in handy to close out games.

Any good PG's that might be available in exchange?

I'm a little surprised that Mitchell showed his hand this early. Even if that was the direction he was leaning, you would think he would at least let a few preseason games play out before making a final declaration so publicly. Let's hope he let Martin know about this decision before talking about it in a radio interview.

That being said, perhaps LaVine really did impress the staff both in what he did in the offseason (added 11 lbs. of muscle, which he absolutely needed to do) plus what he showed last week in camp. I can see the logic in wanting to nail things down early so that these guys have a chance to start building chemistry in the preseason. I just hope he really did earn it.

Martin and LaVine are the only two "pure" shooting guards on the roster. And if you really think old school about how guards were viewed in the past (they could handle and pass almost interchangeably with each other), then Martin is closer to a SF than a SG.

So if we trade Martin for a PG, we have a real depth problem at SG. On the other hand, we seem to have four wings that can score and only one of them can defend. So even though we have nice offensive depth at the wing, the defensive depth sucks. It would be nice if we could eventually trade Martin for a 3&D SG that could come off the bench and play between Miller and Shabazz. Any ideas?

I don't see KMart having enough trade value to get established 3 and D guys like Danny Green or Courtney Lee. I'm not sure if we could get Jae Crowder who could be the next DeMarre Carroll. I like Iman Shumpert but I don't think he's going anywhere. Same goes for PJ Tucker. Names I like that might be attainable are Anthony Morrow, KJ McDaniels and Moe Harkless. Martell Webster is probably attainable but he's injury plagued and do we really want him back. Still wish we had GR3 who Larry is grooming as a 3 and D guy or better yet Kyle Korver who we received in a trade and promptly shipped to Atlanta.

If we can't find a good 3 and D shooting guard, some good front court defenders that might be attainable would be John Henson or James Michael McAdoo.

I spend a lot of time following key media members on twitter. The overwhelming sentiment has been that Zach has been our most impressive player in camp so far. I haven't read a single negative thing about him. So yeah, it sounds like he is definitely earning his stripes in terms of the starting SG. I'll acknowledge it's early in the preseason and things can change. But don't bet on him losing his grip on the position.

But I'm telling you guys, this is fantastic news for us fans and the organization. It's exactly the type of homerun we were hoping for when Flip took the raw but talented player in the middle of the first round. The possibility that we acquired 3 potential all stars in 12 months time is ridiculous good fortune. I hope he plays 30-35 minutes per night and gets every chance to keep developing. It's not always going to be a smooth ride, but how can you not be excited about this?

Whats to say he's shown his hand at all? There could well be no meaning to the teams in terms of starters or backups and was just set up for the scrimmage.

Looking to the years ahead how could you not have a big smile on your face knowing that Rubio, Lavine, Wiggins, and Towns are all in your starting lineup, the ceiling is limitless? Every one of those players offers something potentially special! Then looking at the rest of the roster you have Baz, Dieng, NB, with Payne and Jones also offering potential quality bench play!

After all these years of garbage I'm sure a gentle breeze would excite most of us, but there is legit reason to think this team could contend in a couple years!

Jodie Meeks is the only thing that looks like a doable option after going through NBA rosters on ESPN trade machine.
