Jim peterson thoughts on the wolves

Post by Monster »

This was a podcast that featured Jim Peterson and it's a worthwhile listen. If you want to just listen to the spot with Jim skip at least 10 minutes ahead.

http://www.1500espn.com/raised-by-wolves-2/2016/06/401461/

There were plenty of interesting things but I'll mention a few interesting things I took from it.

He is very high on Thibs. He is good friends with Ed Pickney and Adrian Griffin who coached with Thibs so he had some inside information to frame his thoughts on him. He also had some interesting takes on former people running the wolves that Inthpught were interesting coming from a MN guy that loves both McHale and Flip.

On the draft he feels like the Wolves could use a 4 as Dieng is really a top backup as a 5 and of course they need shooting. He said he hoped to be in on some workouts and then mentioned some stories of workouts in the past that he was either observer or participated in helping with the workout.

He also talks about how he thinks Thibs and Rubio will work together and why he is a such a big Rubio guy. I'll add here that Jon K has mentioned a couple times how impressed he was how Rubio was able to put up a pretty good season (for Rubio it was probably his best of his career) with Flip passing away from cancer before the season while his mother was battling cancer and knowing that was probably the end game for her as well.

This was a really interesting spot from Jim who has his homerness but also has a lot of info about the past and of course about current players. I was surprised how forthcoming he was about some things.

Thanks for posting.

Just starting to listen, and I've got a couple thoughts.

1) Sounds like Jim Pete was coming off a fun night, or dealing with a cold.

2) Yikes, "Kevin McHale was not an executive. He was not a good executive, he was not a good talent evaluator."

It's part of an interesting point he was making, that McHale should have been the coach all along, and Flip should have been the front office guy. It's a good point, even in hindsight, but it still sounds a bit harsh toward McHale.

3) I'm excited for Thibs too, and obviously Jim Pete knows him better than me, but I hope we're not getting our hopes up too much for his impact right away. I want to temper my excitement so we're not disappointed. That said, I think the addition of Thibs is the second most important thing for this franchise after getting Towns. He's more important than Wiggins, Rubio, LaVine, etc.

Nice to hear such positive stuff...sure Jim Pete can be a homer, but he is also a very astute NBA analyst. Thanks for posting, monster.

Drew, I think Jim was also a little cautious about how quickly the Wolves are going to start the season. I think this is natural with a new coach and a young team. Adding a couple guys who know Thibs' style and systems like KG and Deng would help with the transition.

I know it's a point of repeated frustration for me, but Jim gets it wrong like most analysts and fans in scoffing at Thibs' reputation for running players into the ground. He argues that the minutes many Bulls' stars played weren't out of line with other stars in the league. He's right, but Thib's reputation was never about playing his players too many minutes. Have you ever heard a player complain about too little playing time? No, negative comments about Thibs had to do with his tendency of holding grueling mid-season practices. The players didn't like that, and it may have had something to do with the Bulls being worn out in the playoffs. That's the one area that I hope Thibs will change after his year sabbatical.

I will just add that Jon K said after one year away from Thibs he has heard Noah basically appreciates Thibs more now than he did before which would be key IF Noah came here as a FA.

I don't want to overpay for Noah given his age, injury history and declining production. If he wants to come here on a cheap contract (below 6Mill) to play for Thibs then I will agree that the relationship helped us. If not, let somebody else overpay for him.

Couldn't agree more LST. It's not the games I worry about, in fact I welcome our better players getting big minutes. It's the daily minutia and grind that concerns me. The goal of practice during the season should be game preparation and building cohesion, not skill development through repetitious drills. That's what the offseason and training camp is for.

It's a players league so I think this is a bit of a stretch. Suffice to say this franchise needs Thibs at this time and hopefully it's a really good fit for several years.

I like Jim Pete, he's a good mix of a homer with an informed mind. Thanks for posting this.
