Will Glen be less frugal as he takes last shot at a title

Post by TeamRicky [enjin:6648771] »

I wonder if Glen might be less frugal now that he is 75 and perhaps sees the current core as giving him the last chance of his expected lifetime to bring a title to Minnesota. After all, you can't take it with you. I honestly think we shouldn't assume that Glen wouldn't go over the cap if he thought that would be the difference in getting us a title. Also we might see Glen actually buy a draft pick (I think it would be for the first time, rather than be the biggest seller as in the past). I think Thibs will press Glen to do that if possible.

Glenn has been frugal once in his time in MN when he made Kahn pay for his own mistake in hiring Rambis. Where is this idea that he is frugal coming from? He gave KG all the money before the salary cap was put into place. He was fine bringing in Cassell and Sprewell when we needed a push over the top. He just paid Thibs a boatload of money to run the team. When has Glenn truly been frugal?

Glen has been frugal at times with respect to selling draft picks, but my sense is that there were no second rounders that his GM's really coveted. On balance, though, I have never thought of him as a frugal owner. In fact he hurt the franchise when he got caught trying to secretly pay Joe Smith more than the rules allowed.

But I would say that almost any owner is more inclined to open their wallet when they see an opportunity to win, and Glen is no different. I'm fairly certain that he will be willing to pay for free agents that Thibs covets, provided he makes a solid case for it not hurting us from a cap standpoint, and I also think he would be willing to buy additional picks if they were available and the brain trust made a good case.

I don't think Glenn has told his GM's to put some extra cash in his pocket though which is my point. I think Glenn has pretty much let his GM's run the team and he backs them up financially. If they choose to sell picks that's on them. If someone close to the team knows differently I'll accept that because I don't have insider info, but I just think Glenn let's his guys run the team how they want and he backs them up unless they have to cover their own mistake.

The idea is because Glen Taylor has sold more draft picks than any other owner. He also doesn't put up the money for a D-League team. Finally, other posters are saying Glen won't go over the cap and pay the luxury tax.

I didn't say Glen was the most frugal owner as he has spent money for KG and now Thibs. My point is that maybe at his age, he's more willing to spend money than he's done in the past and even incur the luxury tax.

Spending now should only increase the sale price of the team in a few years. Glen has shown the willingness to spend when the situation calls for it. I don't think it will be an issue at all.
