Brown only signed two 10-day contracts with the Suns and then they let him go so he is available. I think there was a report that he was signed beyond that but apparently it was incorrect.
You are right, he's a free agent. My first two sources I checked had listed Brown on the Suns roster, so I didn't bother to check further.

Meh. We don't need him. We've spent years perfecting the tank offense which is predicated on long, two point jump shots. It's pretty fool proof and a brilliant tank strategy as guys still try hard - but are put in a position where they probably won't succeed.
This is just like Johnny Manziel, not in terms of what happened or publicity, but that coming out you just got the feeling he couldn't put it together. I don't see why some teams even take these guys when it's so obvious they don't have it together. I can't remember the last time a low character guy was taken in any sport and it worked out.
Still sad to see, he had a lot of potential. However, some guys get it in their head that they're untouchable early on and it destroys them.

There are plenty of guys that have worked out Tyrann Mathieu comes to mind. Manziel was a guy with so many red flags I couldn't understand why teams were willing to overlook all of them to draft him that high. I think part of the issue with Upshaw is while he has talent he is still pretty raw and only shows flashes from what I saw of him plus he obviously has other issues. I thought if he stayed out of trouble it might take him a couple years before he got it and would be worthwhile whatever level that ended up being. For every Whiteside and Deandre Jordan there are 20 other talented bigs with raw and or issues that don't make it. Loren Woods and Eddie Griffin are a couple examples of the later that played for the Wolves.
It's time to sign Christian Wood, who just had a pretty monstrous 40-point game in the D-League. Chances are he's a better prospect that Payne as he's 20-years old and maybe more productive as soon as he gets here. Also, I'm tired of watching Greg Smith.
