Corey Brewer - is this a breakthrough year for him?

Post by Eitan »

I was so happy when the Wolves signed Corey Brewer this summer (even if his contract is too expensive).

Corey Brewer is in his prime of his ofense and obviously of his defense. He can guard almost anyone in this league.

He knows his roll on the team and he makes your locker room better.

In my opinion, Corey Brewer is a glue guy that does all the little things that give you the W. Every winning team need a glue guy like that.

He is coming back to the Wolves as a better player, matured, experienced and has the desire to win. Corey Brewer is a winner (He was part of Florida & Dallas championships).

I wouldn`t be surprised if Corey Brewer will have a surprising breakthrough year - He got all the tools for that.

Any thoughts?

First off, define "breakthrough year." His seasons in Denver basically solidified the type of player he is so I would already say he broke through, so to speak.

He can guard MOST wings in this league. I wouldn't go as far to say anyone. LeBron, Durant, Melo, Kobe, Jeff Green and Joe Johnson could pose a problem for him. The first four on that list are automatic, but no one in the league can really guard them.

Agreed. He is much more mature as a player coming into this season. I'd attribute a lot of that to Corey understanding his role more as well as slightly improving his shot.

I love Corey, as I'm a die-hard Florida Gators fan as well as T-Wolves fan. Nothing makes me happier than getting former Gators on my pro sports teams. I just don't know what you mean by "breakthrough year."

I'm a Brewer fan too. I was happy when we signed him. Yes, he'll have a good season. I like the Brewer/Bud combo at the 3, and maybe some minutes out there together. Bud. Brew. Beer. Mmm.

Very happy about Corey being back also. He is one of the highlights of the offseason IMO.

My perception of Corey Brewer hasn't changed. He is a player whose energy actually exceeds his results. What I mean by that is if you simply watch him, you love the fact that he brings so much energy and hustle to the game. It makes you forget a lot of the clanked shots and the guys he leaves open for wide open 3's while trying to gamble for a steal.

That being said, and I wrote a lengthy post about this a month or so ago, he has refined his game in subtle ways since his first go-round with the Wolves. The key is for him to be disciplined offensively and defer as often as possible to others. He is not a guy we want shooting. And defensively, while I love the fact he gets his fair share of steals, he can't be so exuberant that he leaves 3-point snipers with wide open shots, a regular occurrence in his first stint with the Wolves when he tried to guard all 5 guys of the opposing team at once.

Overall, I like Corey. I think there were equally good or better options in terms of $ value and the idea that someone with 6 years of NBA experience under his belt is going to "break out" is a little silly, I certainly think he can be a positive contributor if he stays disciplined.

Sorry Camden, My English is not so good.

By using the words "breakthrough year", I meant that in my opinion Corey Brewer has all the tools to jump to the next level as a player in this league.

Q, Don`t get me wrong, he is not an All star or close to that.

But I think he didn`t get to his ceiling yet, and now it`s his time: He is in the right age and the right place to jump to the next level for him as a player.

No worries Eitan.

I don't really see a next level for Corey. I just want him to play at the same level he did last year and I'll be very happy.

Eitan, If you count a "breakthrough" year as less shooting and more disciplined defense for Corey, than I think that's within reach. But if you think he's suddenly going to develop a reliable outside shot or advanced handles, it's not going to happen at this point.

Brewer is what he is the next level woudl be if he turns into the next Tony Allen. Basically he is going to earn his props on D he isn't going to get much if any better on D. I'll take Brewer on my team anyday. Its nice to have some guys on the team that want to play their butt off on every play with some actual ability and Brewer is one of those guys. I am glad to have him back I think he will be a solid player for us.
