4th Quarter Foye Does It Again
4th Quarter Foye Does It Again
Randy Foye just hit a last second three-pointer to beat the Clippers. Wouldn't it be nice to have him on our roster instead of JJ, instead of Shved, instead of Budinger, instead of Luc?? Oh well. So it goes when your team's basketball execs are in over their heads.

Flip traded for him once he can do it again. Maybe we can trade Love for him.

Foye has carved out a decent enough NBA career.
I saw a note where he's playing 40 mpg right now for a halfway decent team. Not bad. But the more interesting part is how much he's making...
We've discussed this A LOT lately... he's making considerably less than Budinger, Brewer, LMAM, Barea, et al. He's making only $3M right now. The league is full of guys who are making real differences on teams for $3M or less (non-rookie deals). Especially guards.
Not a single one on the Wolves.

Obviously Flip doesn't get that concept. The worst part is the number of years. Every year you can find guys that contribute at this price level, but we have GM's that like to spend themselves into a corner. Kahn did it with Brandon Roy and Flip did it with Budinger/Brewer. I would have to say at least Kahn had player out on Roy and we are thankful that AK47 opted out.

Flip doesn't like Foye? Flip once traded the 5th pick in the draft for him. Actually twice when you think about it. lol
Re: 4th Quarter Foye Does It Again
One of the few things Kahn did well was his handling of contracts. He avoided long-term contracts at mid-level money for below average or mediocre players. I never liked the Roy signing, but at least it was only guaranteed for one year. He signed Shved yo a multi-year deal, but for only a little over $3 million per year. Even Barea's contract, while loner term, was for less than mid-level money and it goes down to $4.3 million his last season.
As for Flip, there is no justification for signing both Budinger and Brewer to long term deals at $5 million per season -- not when you can sign or acquire players like DeMarre Carroll at $2.5 million per year and Anthony Morriw at $4 million per year with only a year left. Flip is in way over his head on the business end of basketball operations. Sadly, he seems in over his head on the player-personnel side of things as well.
Taylor seems pretty easily taken in by hucksters. Kahn dazzled Glen with big words and slick overconfidence. Flip manipulated Flip with his "love Minnesota" spin, Gopher past, boyish charm and folksy overconfidence. In the meantime, a proven success as GM, Kevin Pritchard, moved from Portland to Indiana, flying right over the Twin Cities.

Great point Lip. Our execs have their strengths and weaknesses. But their was never a division of labor to make up for it. Taylor seems like a business on a handshake, old school kind of guy. Which is fine in a service business. But this is the NBA. It is global marketing and entertainment, coupled with high performance sports. The fact that Babcock was ever brought back to this team should have been enough to show what is wrong with our franchise. I think every franchise has guys like Kahn and Flip in it, but when they do they don't put all of their trust in those characters. Taylor is so blind and loyal to "good guys" that we just miss a lot. The main problem with this team throughout it's history has been talent evaluation. McHale was the best by far in this, but unfortunately every other aspect of being an NBA GM was beyond him. Such a sad history. I think Flip is talking the right language, and that he hasn't done anything to cripple the franchise at this point. But every one of his moves have been a D+ to a C-. Every NBA analyst I have read or listened to says we should be seizing an opportunity to find sellers at the deadline, and Flip seems reticent to do nothing. It doesn't make any sense to me. Let's swing for the fences even if it means gutting our roster to put a legitimate star next to Love. Those kinds of deals work in the NBA, it has been proven over and over.
