I read the article speculating Lebron going to the Clips. Then after hearing Russel Wilson's post Superbowl speech it may me say about our team "why not us?". Part of what always gets me about the free agent races in pro sports is that it is a foregone conclusion that we wouldn't land anyone. I hope just once that mentality can start to change and a big time free agent picks a small market team because of the talent and opportunity in that situation. I know, I know. It will never happen. But why not us? I say we just strip this thing down to love and expirings and try to sign Lebron. If it doesn't work we trade Love and are ready for a rebuild, perfect. We all already know the NBA is busy rigging the lottery to get the Lakers Wiggins. No one will see this coming in time to block it. Let's flip the whole thing on it's head and sign Lebron. We can be the new hated franchise of the NBA rather than the laughing stock.

Too many contracts to move to sign another max player. 1% chance of happening.

Totally agree. But the Clips have as many big contracts to move too. We have these immovable contracts because targeting another real max player was never on the radar for us. So ho hum lets overpay some mid tier guys and we never get better. It is so far from our objective that it makes me wonder if we would ever really be a contender. We have not shown the ability to draft well enough to have multiple max players emerge from within. You need at least 2 max players (who are worth it) on a roster to contend. That seems to be the formula. I don't see how we can ever really become a contender with our pattern. We need to try something crazy. It worked once with McHale, it definitely worked for Ainge and Reily.

Also there is a 1% chance of any of the trades which are put out on this board happening. It is more a philosophical discussion. :)

Re: Why not us?
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Lebron left his hometown small market franchise that makes me think we would have 0% chance of signing him ever. What about our team is desirable to come to MN for the 2 time champion? We can't offer him the most money and we can't offer him the benefits of state income tax free living like he has in Miami. We don't have a great basketball market even though the Twin Cities are a very large market in the US. We don't have the talent outside of Love and we don't have the shooters that make Lebron look so much better like he has in Miami. Blowing up your team for a chance as slim as Lebron is the dumbest thing we can do. We already have 1 superstar. There is no reason to blow anything up until that 1 superstar is gone. All you are doing is guaranteeing Love's departure when we don't sign Lebron and you just dumped virtually the entire team for scraps just to open the room to sign him. When you are in what is considered a small market, you have a slim chance at superstars and virtually 0% chance when they are former big market stars.
The best chance to get any star when you are in a small market is to trade for one and you have to be willing to give up a lot to get him (i.e. probably Ricky, Pek and picks). At then end of the day, we have to know our limitations as a small market and not make dumb decisions for slim chances. Dallas is the poster child for why you don't blow it up for a chance at superstars. They have no chance at a title and they don't have any promising young players to become a star to go with Dirk. They could have kept their title team together and made another run at it, but instead they blew it up for D Will/CP3 and Dwight, they got none of them and now they are in basketball purgatory.
We're going to have to pull off a CP3/Clippers deal if we want that other star. That is the only way we will get one and even getting one is no guarantee they stay. The only stars I see in purgatory right now are Kyrie, Cousins and Rondo (and possibly Lawson, but he is borderline). The rest of the stars are either on playoff teams or on young teams that have promise but need the vets around them to take them to the next level (i.e. Davis and Holiday in NO). We'd have to make a deal for one of these guys if we were serious about getting another star on the team.

Re: Why not us?
I like it Kahn's. The Dallas example is a fair counter but maybe not relevant to our situation. We are not contenders blowing up a championship winning roster. We are a one star team with some tradeable assets in Ricky and Pek. I would say that Dallas didn't really follow through with the blow up and that is why they are in a problematic position for a while. They needed to trade Dirk when their Dwill / CP3 plan failed though and admit they are in a rebuild. Cuban is loyal to his star and that may end up benefitting him long term when future FAs look at Dallas.
I like your analysis of obtainable stars. Personally I would blow up our roster for Kyrie, not so sure about Cousins and Rondo. I think we would be able to easily lure another FA in the mix with Love and Kyrie together. I don't see Love staying without an earthshaking move like this as it stands.
