The San Antonio Spurs did the expected on Friday when they signed guard Othyus Jeffers to a 10-day contract. The Spurs opened up a spot on the 15-man roster by waiving Malcolm Thomas on Thursday. So, why did the Spurs sign Jeffers?
"He's a defender," Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich tells the San Antonio Express-News. "I like to have somebody who, even though he is not as tall as most threes in the league, he's got the confidence and strength to guard a three. Without Kawhi Leonard, we don't have a defensive sort of three. That's not Belli's (Marco Belinelli) or Manu's (Manu Ginobili) role. They're not physically built for that. So maybe he can fill in a little bit."
Jeffers will likely sign a total of two 10-day contracts and after that the Spurs will have to let him go or give him a rest-of-season deal.
