We're a good offensive team primarily because of our ridiculous free throw differential rating. That also helps explain why we are rated highly in some defensive metrics. But it doesn't mean we can lock down people on defense, not even close.

It's still being waged because the arguments against it have been poor. Look at it a different way. The Wolves are 2nd in the league in Pace, behind Philly and ahead of the Lakers. By logic then, they should be about 2nd in points allowed if they have an average defense, which holds true with both Philly and the Lakers, who allow the 1st and 2nd most points to opposing offenses.

How, then, do the Wolves play the 2nd fastest pace and allow the 13th most points while not doing anything right on defense?

The argument that the head coach himself said we have a bad defense is a poor one? That's better than any argument you've come up with. Unless, of course you are telling us that you and your stats should be more trusted.

With your fancy "numbers" and calcumatators. I didn't actually invent stats.

I have a bachelor of science in Statistics. So I know a little about statistical theory and the proper way to apply them. What do you have?

I double-majored in Biology and Statistics, but this is devolving quickly into an internet p**sing contest. Is this the Adelman quote you are referring to:

"We're just not that good defensively," Adelman says. "We're more of an offensive team. We get to close games, and we've broken down at the end, not getting stops at the right time.

If so, I 100% agree with Adelman. They have broken down at the ends of close games and it's Adelman's job to motivate them to stop that. Like I said earlier in this thread, if there was a site that did Defensive Ratings by quarter, I think the Wolves would be near the bottom in the 4th.

The same could be said for the offense, though, so I'm not sure why that gets a free pass.

Also, these:

"I don't think we've been that great at all this year defensively," Popovich said.

"We've done a bad job," Jackson said. "Everybody on the floor has had breakdowns. There is not one guy who is doing his job defensively. Everybody in uniform has been bad defensively for us, and it's disappointing right now."

It's what coaches do.

Okay KMS I get it. The Wolves are top notch defensively. I know Lebron and Durant hate playing against us because we make it such a long night for them. And Popovich has no answer for our relentless ball hawking smothering team play. It's one reason he wanted that game in Mexico this year to be a home game for the Wolves. He didn't want to come into the house of horrors any more than necessary.

Aren't advanced stats, in any discipline, always put into the context of raw data? You always look at your raw numbers before selecting your more advanced analysis. That being said we are worst in opponents FG% in the league, and 3rd worst in points allowed, but we are 6th in defensive efficiency. In this case it is logical to say that the advanced stats aren't saying that we have a "good" defence. They are saying that we play "efficient" defence if we play at a faster pace than our opponent. I think this matrix would better describe "good" defence if the rate of giving up 100 shots was also applied in the calculation or something to that measure. So for a team like Indiana, all stats (advanced and otherwise, low pts allowed, low opponent FG%, top efficiency rating) show they are tough defensively. Whereas with us we have a lot of unique characteristics (like we don't foul) which give us a good efficiency rating but say little about how good our defence is in reality. Ultimately we don't foul because 40 percent of the time we let our opponent drive straight to the basket and get an easy 2. I think there should be clarity on what is "good" vs what this advance metric truly describes which needs to be put in context.
