The problem is we have little to work with. No cap space, no 1st round picks, no young talent with significant upside.
This franchise has been poorly run for so long now that it comes as no surprise to me that our ceiling is 10th seed in the West. Kahn's time at the helm was a complete disaster and we will be paying for it for many years to come. The reason why we don't even have a 1st round this year: Kahn drafts Wes Johnson then a year later trades him away with a 1st for capspace to sign Andre Kirilenko to a 2 year 20 million contract with a second year player option.
And people wonder why we are in this situation?
Kahn will go down as one of the worst GMs/decision-makers in NBA history.
You need to have historically inept decision-making AND a lot of people have to hate you to keep the momentum going.
Kahn was bad at his job. AND he was a pretentious prick know-it-all ear wax eater who was almost universally disliked, mocked, or dismissed.

And he was hired to be GM of this franchise. Go figure.....

In my rebuild scenario, we keep Pek and Rubio. A lot of Rubio's issues this year seem attitudinal...just not playing with the same flashiness that had many experts projecting him to be a future star as recently as a year ago. Many of us have noticed it...we just don't know why his demeanor is so different. Perhaps a shakeup of the team, including the coach, would bring back the joy that was so fun to watch.
I know I'm in the minority on this, but I really don't understand the love on this board for Trey Burke. I thought he was a great college player, but I never thought he would be a great NBA point guard. First, he is undersized and not quick enough to create steals. Secondly, he was only a 36% 3-point shooter in college with the closer line, and when I watched him, he clearly had less success when pushed out to NBA distance. He would be a big drop off for the Wolves from Rubio. Ricky's rebounding, steals and assists numbers totally blow Burke's away in almost equal minutes. The only stats that Burke wins are FG and FT%, but Ricky even beats Burke in 3-point %. There is something off with Ricky this year, but let's not suggest that Burke would be an upgrade over him, even in an off year. Adelman's refusal to play Shabazz and Dieng doesn't change my opinion that the combo of those two is a much better draft selection than Burke would have been.
I thought most people ripping the team for not keeping Burke were comparing Burke with Muhammad... not Burke with Rubio.
True, Abe, or more accurately, comparing whoever was available at 9 with Muhammad plus the opportunity to draft Dieng. I was just playing off of Camden's post which seemed to suggest that we would be better off starting over with Burke instead of Rubio.
The other issue (Burke vs. Muhammad/Dieng) is more difficult to evaluate, because Adelman has chosen not to give sufficient minutes to our rookies while Burke is getting 30 a night with Utah. We can't know, but I believe that if Muhammad were given 30 minutes a night, he would better Burke's 13.6 PPG on 39% shooting. He was a more prolific scorer than Burke in college and certainly has more of an NBA body than the undersized Burke. And we got the NCAA champions' top shot blocker in addition.

How about assists?
Burke averages about 5. Think Muhammad would have that many yet (total)?
No chance he'd have 5 assists (per game)... it's never going to be Shabazz's strong suit. But is it really fair to compare a point guard's assists to a small forward's? Isn't that a little like saying Burke isn't nearly as good a player as Dieng because Dieng is averaging almost 5 blocks per 36 minutes while Burke is averaging less than .2. Or comparing Burke's rebounds to Muhammad's? I was trying to compare the only meaningful comparable stats for Burke and Muhammad...PPG and FG%. But at the end of the day it's all conjecture anyway because Burke is getting floor time and Shabazz isn't.
Maybe a better question is could Shabazz match Brewer's 1.6 assists per game, since I'm proposing in another thread that Adelman give Corey's minutes to Shabazz. Based on his college record, the answer would be no. But based on his recent D League experience, the answer would be yes.

Hey LS....you need to re-read. He said 5 TOTAL...like for the year. It was a funny.

Yeah, I saw...but I think last night's game destroyed my sense of humor :) .
We need to make a big move and I think it has to be to trade for the guy we wish Rubio was now. That guy is Rondo. Center the deal around Ricky and all we should have to do is make the salaries work for Boston to take it. They are rebuilding and Ricky with Stevens would be a good combo to jumpstart the rebuilding process. I doubt Boston gets any better offers than Ricky unless it would involve picks which nobody is giving up this year. This would be the make or break deal of the franchise in its current cycle. Rondo's deal would be up at the same time as Love's early opt out so we would either retain them both or blow it all up next offseason. This is the deal we have to make if we want to push this team to the next level. Our wings are not good and make too much money to deal and Love and Pek have played like All-Stars this year, so Ricky is really the only piece that could bring back an all-star like Rondo.
No reason to doubt that. I agree that Rubio has looked better. Right now he looks joyless, and his confidence is shot. Love is sniping, JJ wants out probably can't stand Love.
Flip has had one off season, one draft. He gets more than one to fix everything, right?
I am not for blowing it all up. Love will stay if he thinks there is a team with a shot here. Trading Ricky now, at the bottom of the market, would be stupid.
Wish I had some easy answers, but there aren't any
