How does the best player on a losing team lead?

Post by Porckchop »

I really dont know. Does he score more, rebound more? Talk less, more, not at all? Do u want a player thats more Leslie Frazier or more Harbaugh?
Tim Duncan for instance, he came into the league with the perfect scenario and started winning right away. Hes never been known to speak his mind and why would he? He has a great coach and hasnt had much to gripe about. Still considered a great leader.
Now on the other hand u have a guy like Barkley. Great player. Came into the league on a shitty Sixers team. Brilliant player on bad teams and apparently spoke his mind too much. Was he? Or was he trying to be a leader on teams that needed a voice? If he had been winning I would guess fans would have missed out on a whole lot of Sir Charles sound bites.

I guess my point is its hard to determine what makes a good leader when the scale of circumstance isnt even.

I've got some leadership pointers for Love...

Don't complain about perceived missed calls, especially when doing so puts your team a man down on defense.

Don't pout or jack up bad shots just because the offense hasn't gone through you for 2-3 possessions.

Don't move out of help position to secure a possible rebound, and don't take rebounds away from teammates.

Don't call out teammates publicly. Don't get into spats and fights with deep bench players. Always be the bigger man, the bigger player.

Stats are how you become liked. How you carry yourself is the road to being loved. And Kevin could really be loved here if he did a few more of the little things.

How many players in history r considered loved and remembered on like-ability? I think fans are more likely to forget personal flaws if the numbers or rings are there. IMO
I bet people in Detroit love Lambier (sp?) Rodamn in Chicago? Heck Rodman in Detroit too!

If the Wolves were 15 games over .500 but came off a bad loss like last nite and Love had the same comments would ur thoughts be different?

Barkley was different in that he was just brutally honest, and that brutal honesty extended to his own play. He wasn't above standing in the locker room post game and bluntly stating he sucked and the loss falls on his shoulders. I think maybe if Love didn't tip toe around his bad games and did like Barkley, stated clearly and unconditionally that the loss is on him, that he just plain sucked then he would get more respect both from fans and teammates.

Had he stated yesterday that he was personally flat out terrible in the first half and had he played even halfway to his own standards they would have won. Then and only then stated that JJ and DC need to keep the team first attitude then the focus would be squarely on Love, but the message would fall heavy on JJ and DC. IMO that is what a real leader does after yesterdays game.

If the Wolves were 15 games over .500 and he called out his teammates publicly it would be far worse IMO.
