Rubio's next contract
I think reserving the Franchise Max Level Contract for Rubio seems pretty laughable at this point. The only bright side is the Wolves won't have to spend a fortune to keep Ricky here! With guys like Lillard, Isaiah Thomas, John Wall, Kemba Walker and MCW all taking off in the last two years (while Rubio hasn't improved), it would be difficult to make the argument that he's a top-15 PG right now.
So what's that worth? My best guess would be a Jeff Teague level contract ($8mil/year), though you could make the argument that Teague is more worthy of that contract than Rubio since he has been the starting PG on a playoff team 3 years in a row and counting

Re: Rubio's next contract
Is it even worth re-signing him if he doesn't show extreme improvement? Why throw $8M a year at him if he can't produce something that could help us win a championship. I love Ricky, but I'm growing more and more worried that maybe he's not our guy. Might be a better move to try and trade him for a couple draft picks. Sadly, Trey Burke might have been that guy, who fell in our laps, and he's in Utah now.
Lot of mixed feelings from me tonight about this team. Didn't like how we played tonight at all. Just some thoughts that even sting to type.

Agreed on it not being that big, although you can always count on some team (NY anyone?) to overpay...
As far as the guys you mentioned most of them aren't exactly efficient either.
Even after Wall has taken it to another Level since Beal got injured he's still shooting a shade over 40% and his 3 point shooting? .305%. Kemba? is actually shooting under 40% like ricky and has an even worse 3 point shooting % at an amazing 31%.
Hell even Lillard who i would rather have than Ricky is shooting under 40% from the field, although he's around 40 for 3's.
Surprisingly the most efficient guy is Thomas in Sac Town. Get to see a lot of Kings games living in Vegas, and the kid is a baller. More suited for the bench be damnned.

Re: Rubio's next contract
There's no way Rubio is a top 15 PG now. The problem for us is that he is overvalued in the league. I don't know why...maybe because of the flashy passes and the boy band looks. I listen to opposing team announcers on League Pass, and they rave about him. He is hugely overrated, and his next contract will be for more money than his numbers deserve. I'm thinking it will cost us at least $10-12 million to keep him here, and the fans won't allow him to get away. He's a unique player, just not a top 15 PG.

Re: Rubio's next contract
Well, it's certainly too early to suggest trading Ricky. He's played only a full season and a half of NBA games due to lockouts and injuries.
That being said, I certainly agree that he's not a guy we should be maxing out unless there is a pretty dramatic improvement in his ability to make shots and finish.

Re: Rubio's next contract
The past two offseasons we worried and worried about the Wolves moves and how we would avoid eventual luxury tax hell like Oklahoma City with Love's Max deal, Pek's extension, and Rubio's impending extension. The good news is we may not have to worry about that. The bad news is that if Rubio isn't worth the max the Wolves aren't anything worth while. It's troubling because this might be the best Wolves' season they've had in 8 seasons but they may not even make the playoffs. It can't be time for the re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-rebuild can it?

Re: Rubio's next contract
as i said in another thread earlier, as it is Ricky is valid NBA starter, he also has potential and is very marketable esp. in franchises with lots of latin population around .. i would see fair offer to be around 7-9 mil (Teague, G.Hill, Dragic etc. category) .. however as i look his numbers, so far this season he is .380 at 3pt range (from .330 carrer) and he is amazing .860 at FTs which is good sign also, his main problem is shot selection, he should just not take those silly drives in last seconds of shooting clock and better call for screen and take balanced J
Re: Rubio's next contract
I don't believe signing Ricky is a worry, as I don't think he wants to be here. I think, as Lip pointed out, he'd like to be on a team with better athletes. Benching him at the end of close games is telling him we don't think he is our guy anyway.
If Westbrook ends up in LA (with Love?), watch Ricky end up in OKC

Re: Rubio's next contract
He is showing improvement in his shooting this season, but as the poster above said, its his shot selection that is poor. Some games he is scoring very well and others he is not a threat in the scoring game at all. His basketball IQ is so elite that you have to keep him around. Plus he is so young, give him a few more years, and for 8 million a year? That would be a steal.
Re: Rubio's next contract
I agree 8 mil per year will be steal down the line. Wolves need to stay the course with this current core and keep adding to it when possible. Not every team can be an instant success while also maintaining longevity. I say take the route Memphis and Atlanta did over the last 8 years or so, by sticking with their guys, taking their lumps and ending up with very good teams with great chemistry. I dont think I could handle a rebuild again at this point.
