Possible targets to strengthen our bench

Post by KiwiMatt »

Here's a few names I've been thinking about as realistic acquisitons to help strengthen our bench play:

Jason Thompson (SAC): Solid big who can play both the 4/5. Can rebound, block shots and score at a respectable rate. Currently fighting for game time against Cousins, Patterson and Mbah A Moute. Good contract for a big as well, 5-6 million per season for the next 4 years. Capable of starting if injury to Pek or Love happened. A trade straight up for D Will might entice the Kings.

Jimmer Fredette (SAC): Prolific 3pt scorer who really hasn't been given a chance in Sacramento playing behind Isiah Thomas and Vasquez. Expiring 2.4 million contract. Could be acquired possibly by straight up trade for Alexey Shved. Would play the 'Hoiberg' role and be used as a specialist 3 point shooter off the bench.

Glen Davis (ORL): Undersized PF currently injured, but more than capable of putting up big numbers. With the emergence of Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O'Quinn he could be on the block soon. Maybe ORL would bite on a trade straight up for D Will. Oladipo, Harkless, Harris, Williams, Nicholson and Vujevic gives them a good young core to develop.

Jan Vessely (WAS): Has struggled to find game time in a loaded Washington front court. Is a 7 footer with good athleticism and is still only 23.

Feel free to add any others or your thoughts on the forementioned.

Courtney Lee: Makes the most sense. Played with Adelman before. Good defender and reliable three-point shooter. Good in transition and an okay athlete. Also has legit SG size. Only problem is I don't know if Boston would trade him for D-Will since they have Olynyk and Sully already. $5M a year until 2016. Not too bad, honestly. Hoping he becomes a Wolf eventually. Personally been a fan of the guy since he was a young man in Orlando. Make it happen Flip.

Evan Turner: Value is high right now, but he's got to level out before the deadline right? Would give us a nice scoring option off the bench. Six man quality. Interchangeable at SG/SF.

Caron Butler: Decent defender. Would give us a nice three-man rotation at the wing positions with K-Mart and Brewer. Expiring contract. Solid option here.

MarShon Brooks: Cheap option if we could give Boston Shved for him. Either you like him or you don't. I'm a fan and think he'd do well here. Expiring contract since his option was declined, but he should be cheap regardless. Only 24.

Pipe dream: Kyle Korver. Lights out shooting. Can only wonder what he'd do for our team. Would he be available? Maybe, maybe not. Underrated defender and passer. He's about as good as it gets coming off screens, pindowns and curls.

I'l add Marvin Williams of the jazz. He is a long and athletic 6'9 wing who is a decent defender and shooter. He is also an expiring contract. He could form a 3man rotation with martin+corey at the wings. DW + shved for williams to match salary.

Of the ones mentioned above, I like thompson, davis and butler. Thomspon is not much of a shotblocker but he is a solid rebounder and big.

Davis could be a big guy that can anchor the bench offensively for us. Butler would be a solid addition as an expiring and vet but i like marvin williams more than him right now.

Assuming Derrick Williams and Shved are the bait, I could think of a few more that would work contract-wise. I'm not sure either of these guys have any real value left, so I think we need to temper expectations in trades.

Williams + Shved for Marcus Thornton

Williams + Shved for Trevor Ariza

Williams for Courtney Lee

Williams + Shved for Terrence Ross and Landry Fields

Willams + Shved for Ekpe Udoh and Gary Neal (after Dec. 15)

Williams + Shved for Ed Davis and Tayshaun Prince

Williams + Shved for Thaddeus Young

I like the ariza deal. He could form a nice wing bench duo with bud when bud gets healthy.

Il also offer dw/shved for marvin williams and dw for jason thomson. Dont think we have a shot at glen davis, prince or thaddeus young.

Im not a fan of thornton, his role would be too similar to barea if we do add him and il take jj. Fields is overpaid and ross is over rated.

Any type of deal would be nice. D-Will and Shved are useless.

Which is why we should avoid taking back similar type of players. We would like players that can actually contribute positively to the team or at least help us in our cap situation.

I think both of those players could help. Ross is stuck in a similar situation as Williams, behind Derozan. He's got potential to be a nice 3&D bench guy. My point was that you can't go to teams with an offer of "take these two shitty players and give me back some good ones" and expect it to work.

Agreed that it wont be easy to unload dw and shved kms. We just differ on how we view ross and fields.
