Re: I am scared to death
i think so also, if we can compete with best teams, we can offer much more money and it is unlikely that Love would leave imho .. is that risky? yes it is .. but putting whole franchise under the pressure to perform well and contend should help our chances to resign Love next time ..
as for L.A. i dont see that happening, they will try to sign Lebron or Melo or both next offseason and they have no players on contract for following season, so i expect them to play hard on free agent market and to have big contracts more or less set for few years to go ..
only if they fail to attract any big fish they could tank one season and try to attract Kevin, but it is not much likely imho

Agreed with everything you said except one itty bitty detail that I've bolded. K-Mart came here for three reasons. 1) Adelman. 2) K-Mart said he had to play with a superstar. K-Love is that. 3) Ricky Rubio. Said he's never played with a pass-first point guard. Rubio has that allure.
So all in all, you were spot-on with everything you said. Well written Lip! :D
I think that superstar stuff was just lip service from a guy who last played with Westbrook and Durant! I think it would be more accurate to replace your number two with "Play for more money and a starting role"!

More money and a starting role is on EVERY free agent's mind if they can get it. I thought we were going for more specific reasons.

As much as it sucks for Wolves fans, you can't blame the guy for keeping every option open and seeking the best deal/place for his career.
And that is here. The best money is here, and he likes the Twin Cities.

We have no idea if he truly like the Twin Cities, yes he says he does, but it would be an impressive level of stupidity to admit otherwise while playing for the cities team. And even if he does like it, does he like it more than other cities?
Re: I am scared to death
I have no doubt that Love likes the Twin Cities. I also have no doubt that how much he likes or doesn't like various cities will not be a significant factor in his decision. Where you have your house doesn't matter much during the season when you are constantly traveling around the country. It matters even less to a guy like Love who is known as a guy who generally stays in and doesn't partake in the "night life." It's been proven over the years that an NBA player's decision on what team he signs with, assuming he has a choice, is driven almost exclusively by the following three factors in order of importance:
1. Money - who offers the most;
2. Winning - who projects as having the best chance of contending for a championship; and
3. Personal success -- which team has a coach, style of play and teammates that will collectively bring out the best in the free agent's game.
The Wolves can't be beat on money because only the Wolves can offer a 5th year under the CBA. And as a max player, that 5th year for Love will be worth over $15 million.
There won't be many if any teams that can beat the Wolves on the personal success factor, provided Rubio and Adelman (or a coach similar to Adelman) stay.
The second factor is the wild card. But so far it looks like the Wolves will be a playoff team this season with the chance to advance next season. The Lakers can't necessarily reboot over night. And there just won't be many if any teams with enough cap room that are also projected as championship contenders. And even if there is such a team or two, those teams will end up over $15 million short on the money.
Anything can happen, but the chances of Love signing elsewhere are pretty slim.

Re: I am scared to death
I think what Love does, has very little to do with our team. I don't think our results can convince him to stay. I think failure to make the PO's could force him to leave, but ultimately it will depend on what teams like the Lakers can offer him as far as contending in the near future. If it is anywhere close, I think he is gone.
I don't believe he will sign an extension, and I think that is our bigger problem. We can't really give him that fifth year unless he becomes a FA first, and even then it is only the guarantee of the fifth year. It isn't likely that he doesn't sign another contract to play that season, so we are giving him the guarantee, and a 7.5% raise versus a 4.5% if he signs elsewhere. The money difference just isn't enough of a reason to stay. My fear is that we will be rolling the dice on whether he walks away for nothing.

The guarantee of a 5th year is the guarantee of at least $15 million. That is truly a big deal to anyone, especially someone whose career could end or whose value could change dramatically with one bad landing on a rebound that ends in a popping sound. If the Wolves are a playoff team this season and next and we win or come close to winning at least one playoff round, then Love will stay.

I'd add to that third point Lip by saying that personal ties off the court can also play an important role. LeBron chose to play with Wade and Bosh in part because they're obviously good players (and some could argue Miami is nice), but also because he knew them personally and was friends with them and he knew they got along. I remember people teased them as the "super friends" but it's not all that weird when you think about it. That's why the Westbrook thing is a little scary, although the timing isn't great for them to get together. But it also makes me glad to see this team (particularly the starters) really showing some good chemistry this year. Winning helps, but I think Brewer and Martin have blended in well off the court as well as on.
I would also say that location is probably at least somewhat important to some guys, but that it works differently for different players. I think a guy like Dwight realized he can't handle NY or LA. But Amare wanted to go to NY to be the man as well as getting the money. Nash said he chose LA in part because of the chance to win and because he could be close to his kids in Phoenix (which I guess is close if you can just fly there in an hour and you can afford flying all the time). So I'd say location DOES matter, but that it's a wild card, and really can play in different ways for different players.
Re: I am scared to death
Drew -- I agree with your analysis of the wild card relevance of personal relationships and location. As you indicated, location is a tough one to gage because it is so individualized and nuanced. And like you, it is the Westbrook factor that concerns me based on their personal friendship and southern California ties. I can see both signing with the Lakers.
But when the dust settles, it almost always come down almost entirely to money and winning. LeBron had a personal relationship with Wade and Bosh and I suspect he liked the warm weather and flare of Miami. But the bottom line is that LeBron knew that playing with those other two guys on a team run by Pat Riley gave him his best chance to win. LeBron has said that Pat Riley was a decisive factor because of his reputation and track record as a winner.
Some things are beyond the control of the Wolves organization. But they have some control over the whether Adelman stays, over the quality of the talent surrounding Love and over how much money they offer him. We have to hope that Flip makes some very astute judgments over the next 18 months. I suspect the Wolves are planning on Love opting out after next season, at which point the Wolves can offer him a max 5-year deal. If the Wolves have two playoff seasons under their belt, along with at least one playoff series win and Rubio signs an extension, then I'd say the chances of re-signing Love are very high. The chances go down from there based largely on wins and losses and what Ricky decides to do.
