Tom Izzo
Pat Reusse throws out Izzo's name as a potential 2014-5 coaching option. He cites Izzo's age as an indicator that he might be ready for one more challenge, and suggests that Taylor would pay him much more than MSU. I still like the possibility of Hoiberg, but I can see that Izzo might be more ready for a career change than Fred. I like Izzo's winning pedigree and intensity. What do others think of Reusse's idea?
Re: Tom Izzo
I don't see Izzo coming here and I'm not sure he'd translate well to the NBA. I think Hoiberg would be a better and more likely choice.

I tend to agree, lip, and Hoiberg is still my first choice. It's interesting to me that Fred runs an offense that is quite NBA-like, and I like that he seems to be the one guy who has been able to get through to Royce White. Every team is likely to have 1 or 2 knuckleheads on it, and it's valuable to have a coach who can reach them.
I read the Strib online, and Reusse's headline was misleading. It said "Forget Fred Hoiberg", and I was expecting a categorical denial of interest by Fred. Instead, Patrick was just throwing out another option.

Fred Hoiberg is my number one choice by a mile. He's young so we can build something with him, instead of an older guy like Karl or even Izzo (as mentioned in another post). He has shown great success with ISU. And then obviously his Timberwolves connection.
I wouldn't be able to have another retread of a past NBA coach. Guys like Hollins, Karl, Flip have all coached and had their chance. We need an infusion of youth on the bench. Either a top assistant off the Spurs or similarly successful team (even this is risky, see Brian Shaw & Kurt Rambis) or someone like Fred Hoiberg.

Many of us will remember that you confidentially got a name from an inside source a month or two ago. We're all going to be wondering if this is your personal choice or the name that was given you...or both.
Guess we'll just have to be patient :) .

I've said this before, as an ISU alum. Hoiberg is not leaving ISU, he is a hometown guy there. Yes he may have a connection with the TWolves, but his connection in Ames is so much greater. He has 3 kids in K-12, he has the respect of everyone in the city hence the nickname "the mayor". He's not going to be coaching the wolves anytime soon.

Hoiberg's salary at ISU: $1.5 million
Adelman's salary: $5 million
Fred can still be "the mayor" in Ames May-September...heck, after a few years at $5 million per, he can buy Ames! Freddy is too smart to pass up an extra $3.5 million a year, no matter how much he loves Ames.
